The Baltimore Ravens announced on Sunday that they have parted ways with Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas. According to the team’s official statement, the reason for the termination of Thomas’ contract was “personal conduct that has adversely affected the Baltimore Ravens. “

The “personal conduct” that Ravens mentioned is most likely the incident that happened between Thomas and fellow safety Chuck Clark. The two had an altercation during Friday’s practice, which was reportedly initiated by Thomas.

When asked to clarify the reasons for Thomas’ departure, Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh declined to give further info. “I think the statement speaks for itself,” said Harbaugh. “There’s not much more to add to that. Just planning on leaving it at that, at this point.”

Following the incident with Clark, Baltimore initially explored trade options for Earl Thomas, but any deal was hard to pull off due to the four-year, $55 million contract he signed with the organization last year. The team ended up deciding that the release is the most painless option, and according to reports, they will now look to void his $10 million guaranteed salary.

On Thomas’ part, he is now free to pursue new employment in the NFL. The most likely candidates for his signature are the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans.

After trashing Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Baltimore Ravens are considered to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season. The confidence is high in the Ravens’ locker room as well, with safety Earl Thomas having no doubt his team will go all the way.

Thomas had a chat with reporters ahead of Ravens’ matchup with San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, when he was asked whether this game perhaps offers a preview of Super Bowl LIV.

“You think the 49ers are going to the Super Bowl? It could be, let’s see,” – said Thomas. “We’ll just go out there and try to play the best football we can possibly do. And when the Super Bowl comes, whoever we play, they’re going to be in trouble.”

While some might say that Thomas is a bit too confident, the fact is that Baltimore Ravens look like the best team in football at the moment. The Ravens are currently on a seven-game winning streak and have the league’s largest point margin of plus-184. They also lead the NFL in rushing offense and are second in total offense.

Baltimore is currently favored to win Super Bowl according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, having a 26.2 percent chance to take it all. New England Patriots are second with 25.7 percent.

During his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Thomas said that he would like to return to Seattle one day and sign a ceremonial contract which would allow him to retire as a Seahawk.

“I envision myself retiring as a Seahawk,” – Thomas explain. “I would never burn a bridge there. You know, I still love my teammates. I definitely see myself signing maybe a one-day deal, and hopefully, they’ll hang my jersey in the rafters.”

There is plenty of reasons why the Seahawks might decide to honor Earl Thomas’ wishes when the time comes. During his time in Seattle, Thomas established himself as one of the best safeties in the league and helped the organization to win Super Bowl XLVIII. He also added to that six Pro Bowl appearances alongside three All-Pro honors.

But that all changed on Wednesday, when reports surfaced that Ravens will sign a duo of Pro Bowlers in former Seattle Seahawks’ safety Earl Thomas and New Orleans Saints’ running back Mark Ingram.

According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Thomas will ink a four-year, $55 million contract with Baltimore that includes $32 million guaranteed. With his signing, the team fills one of their biggest needs at the safety position as they Eric Weddle.

Ingram, on the other hand, intends to sign a three-year, $15 million deal with the Ravens. The 29-year-old was expected to stay with the Saints following the end of 2018 season, but the team went and got former Minnesota Vikings RB Latavius Murray instead.

These two signings represent a big step in Baltimore Ravens’ efforts to rebuild their roster and make another playoff run in 2019. Besides releasing Weddle, the team also lost C.J. Mosley, Terrell Suggs and Za’Darius Smith in the free agency. All of these players were starters in Ravens’ defense which was ranked top in the NFL in 2018.

Earl Thomas spent his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks, but leaves the franchise on bad terms after he didn’t get a contract extension he wanted. He had a strong start of 2018 season, making three interceptions in the first four games, but ended up being ruled for the season after breaking a bone in his leg in Week 4. Mark Ingram played some excellent football in these past three seasons and  finished last year with respectable numbers, managing 645 rushing yards, 170 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. Still, Saints didn’t feel comfortable giving him a big deal due to his advanced age, making him look for better offers somewhere else. Ingram has two Pro Bowl appearances in his career.
