The Washington Football Team decided to move on from their young quarterback Dwayne Haskins, whom they selected with the No. 15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The team announced the release of Haskins on social media on Monday with an accompanying statement by head coach Ron Rivera.

Haskins acknowledged the move on Twitter as well, writing: “I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.”

While it’s rare that teams move on from their high draft picks after just two years, Washington’s decision to release Dwayne Haskins doesn’t come as a major surprise.

Haskins failed to produce on the field so far in his NFL career, struggling to get accustomed to NFL football. In 16 games he played under center in the previous two seasons, he managed to throw for only 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns while also having 15 picks. Washington is 3-10 with him as a starter.

Haskins also did himself a disservice with his off-the-field behavior. Besides the reports about lack of commitment and poor working habits early in the season, he also breached the COVID-19 protocols multiple times, resulting in fines and him being stripped of the captaincy.

Washington will now move on with Kyle Allen and Alex Smith as their quarterbacks, and it shouldn’t be surprising if they also select another one in the draft next year.

Haskins, on the other hand, will most likely get an opportunity for a fresh start with another organization down the road. He is still only 23 years old and has a big upside, something that will definitely intrigue QB-needy teams.

Despite demoting Dwayne Haskins from starter to third-string quarterback in a single week, Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera insists that he hasn’t given up on the Ohio State product.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Rivera said that losing the starting job can be beneficial for the 23-year-old quarterback.

“Again, as I said, I have not quit on the kid as far as his development,” said Rivera. “This is an opportunity for him to continue to learn and grow and develop.”

Haskins has been putting disastrous numbers in his first four starts in 2020 while reportedly not working hard enough between games and failing into “poor study and practice habits.” This prompted Rivera to turn to offseason acquisition Kyle Allen as the new starter and install veteran Alex Smith as the backup.

It is believed that in another situation, Washington would ride out the 2020 season with Haskins under center no matter the result. However, with NFC East being wide open for the taking, Rivera decided to make a switch and attempt to make the playoffs with a QB more familiar with his system.

Dwayne Haskins started 11 games for Washington since entering the league as the No.15 pick in 2019. He completed 59.6 percent of his passes in those games while throwing for 2,304 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

First-year head coach of the Washington Football Team Ron Rivera has apparently seen enough of quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

The team has announced that Kyle Allen will get the start in Week 5. To add insult to injury, reports have stated that Haskins will not even be the backup quarterback. The backup against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5 will be Alex Smith, who spent the last two years recovering from a gruesome leg injury that almost ended his career.

Haskins was drafted in the first round of the 2019 draft and has played only 11 games over his first two seasons. He is coming off the first 300-yard game of his career, which the 23-year-old QB earned in a 31-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

However, Haskins has been very inaccurate and reports say that he is still having trouble learning the offensive system. There are several other very obvious inconsistencies in his game. Haskins has a habit of staring down the receiver he wants to throw to and his footwork has been shaky, which is why he has been so wildly inaccurate at times.

The Football Team’s offensive line and lack of weapons haven’t been doing him any favors either. Haskins was sacked 13 times in the first four games. He has thrown for 939 yards with 4 touchdowns and three interceptions this year.

Rivera is familiar with Allen, who he brought along from Carolina, where both Rivera coached and Allen played last year.

Allen started 13 games for the Panthers last year and finished with a 6-7 record. Obviously, Rivera believes that Allen’s familiarity with the offensive system the team has installed under him will be good for the young offense and lead to more efficient play.

Two offseason battles for the starting quarterback position have already been decided.

The Washington Football Team and the Los Angeles Chargers have announced that their starting QBs for the beginning of the 2020 season will be Dwayne Haskins Jr. and Tyrod Taylor, respectively.

Neither of the two decisions comes as much of a surprise. Washington coach Ron Rivera announced on Wednesday that Haskins will be starting Week 1 against the Eagles. Haskins started nine games in his 2019 rookie season, taking over for veteran Case Keenum who was benched due to his poor play.

Haskins didn’t have much competition in training camp this year. It was between him and former Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen and veteran Alex Smith, who is still working his way back to full health from an almost career-ending leg injury he suffered two years ago.

While the Redskins chose to go with the young player, the Chargers are sticking with veteran Tyrod Taylor, in the wake of QB Philip Rivers leaving this offseason after 16 years to join the Indianapolis Colts.

The Chargers drafted their potential future franchise quarterback in this year’s draft, taking Oregon QB Justin Herbert with the 6th overall pick.

But as expected, their plan is to sit Herbert in his first year to allow him to learn from veteran Taylor and get accustomed to the NFL before taking over.

When Washington Redskins traded for quarterback Kyle Allen this offseason, many believed he is slotted for the backup job behind second-year signal-caller Dwayne Haskins. Allen, however, doesn’t think so.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Allen said that he intends to compete with Haskins and try to win the starting job for the 2020 season.

“I think the expectation is to come in and compete for the job,” said Allen. “I think that’s an awesome opportunity.”

Allen reunited in Washington with Ron Rivera, who coached him in 2019 when they were both members of Carolina Panthers’ organization. The 24-year-old believes that familiarity with Rivera’s system will end up giving him the edge in the competition.

“I think the continuity with the system is huge for me, and I think it’s going to be big for the team too,” he added. “If we don’t have a lot of OTAs or don’t have OTAs at all, it gives at least someone on the team a chance with experience in the system to be able to teach it to the other guys and the offense, and relay what the coaches are saying, and just kind of teach the offense to everyone and teach the language.”

Kyle Allen started 12 games in 2019 with Panthers and finished the season throwing for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Dwayne Haskins, on the other hand, had seven TDs and seven INTs in nine games he played in his rookie seasons with Redskins.

Rookie quarterbacks have been taking up both the media headlines and starting QB jobs in recent weeks. Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray started Week 1, New York Giants’ Daniel Jones wrapped up a big comeback win against Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend in his first start, while even sixth-round pick Gardner Minshew got his chance with Jacksonville Jaguars. Meanwhile, Washington Redskins’ No.15 pick Dwayne Haskins doesn’t seem anywhere near making his NFL debut.

Redskins lost three straight under Case Keenum as their starting quarterback, but the head coach Jay Gruden recently told the media that he doesn’t intend to make a change at QB position. And reportedly even if he would, veteran Colt McCoy might be the next in line for the job. Surprisingly, Haskins doesn’t seem to have a problem with this.

During a recent chat with reporters, Haskins said that he is happy for the rookie QBs that got their chance this year but that he doesn’t mind waiting a bit more for his own opportunity.

“No, I’m happy for those guys,” – said Haskins on Friday. “It’s easy to look at the rookie class and be like, ‘Rookies are playing, why am I not playing?’ I want to be like Tom Brady and Drew Brees and that’s something that doesn’t happen overnight. Tom didn’t play at first; Aaron Rodgers didn’t play at first.”

While he is confident in his abilities, Haskins knows he has a lot of work in front of him if he wants to succeed.

“I know I can play well and play at a high level,” – he added, “But I want to keep getting better. I feel I can be really, really good. I want to be a great quarterback, one of those guys you talk about for years to come. That’s not going to happen overnight.”

Haskins played college football with Ohio State, where he spent only one year as a starter. In 14 starts, he posted 13-1 record while throwing for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Back in April, Washington Redskins’ decided to use their 15th overall pick in 2019 NFL Draft to take Ohio’s quarterback Dwayne Haskins. The pick was not only met with positive reactions from the fans, but the Redskins’ players also think the team made the right decision.

The most excited to see this development was, however, safety Landon Collins, whose former team New York Giants also had the chance to get Haskins and passed on it.

“I thought he was going to the Giants, honestly,” – said Collins during his recent appearance on Ian Rapoport’s podcast. “That’s who I thought they were going to get; that’s who I thought they needed, and they decided to go elsewhere.”

Giants’ decided to take Duke’s QB Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick instead and Haskins fell into Redskins’ lap. According to Collins, this allowed the Redskins to get the best QB in the draft.

“When I saw we picked him up, I was like, we just stole the best quarterback,” – he added

Besides Giants, other QB-needy teams decided to skip on Dwayne Haskins, mostly because he played only one season as a starter in college and is considered a project. Still, with uncertainty surrounding their veteran QB Alex Smith, Redskins decided that Haskins has enough upside to justify the first-round pick and made the gamble. The 22-year-old is expected to sit 2019 behind Case Keenum and probably take the starting job in 2020 or 2021, depending on his development.

Haskins played 14 games in college in 2018 and completed 70.1 percent of his passes for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Ohio State’s quarterback Dwayne Haskins is viewed as one of the top prospects in 2019 NFL Draft but it seems like no one knows where will he end up being drafted. The majority of NFL analysts, however, think that New York Giants will be his next destination as the franchise looks for a replacement for their aging QB Eli Manning.

Expectations are that Haskins would sit a year or two and learn from Manning before taking over the starting job. As it turns out, the 21-year-old wouldn’t be opposed to this outcome.

Haskins recently talked with NFL Network’s Insider Ian Rapoport on the RapSheet and Friends podcast and said that he would have “no problem sitting behind” Manning and learning from the veteran QB.

“Eli Manning is a legend. I grew up watching Eli and I’d have no problem sitting behind him and learning from him, like how I did with J.T. [Barrett] at Ohio State,” – said Haskins. “Whatever team drafts me, I’ll be able to sit back and learn from the guy that’s there and be able to compete with him and push him, but know that a guy’s there because he’s a veteran, he’s done it before, he’s professional.”

If Giants end up passing on Dwayne Haskins, several other QB-needy teams might take their chances on him including Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins. Haskins played 14 games in 2018, completing 70.0 percent of his passes and throwing for 4,831 and 50 touchdowns.

While New York Giants stated several times that they are committed to Eli Manning as their starting quarterback, almost everyone around the league is expecting them to take a QB with one of their two first-round picks (No. 6 and No. 17 pick). That would be a logical step for the organization given the fact that Manning is 38 years old and he hasn’t played on an elite level for several years. Still, Giants have surprised us before so we will have to wait for the 2019 NFL Draft to find out.
