Dusty Baker’s time away from baseball didn’t last long. After retiring as a manager following the 2023 season, Baker reportedly accepted a role in the San Francisco Giants’ front office, where he’ll serve as a special assistant.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Baker will assist the president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, on the baseball side while also helping Giants’ president, Larry Baer, with the ownership part of the business. The Giants are expected to make the move official at some point this week.

The move will mark Baker’s return to the Giants after 20 years. Baker first played with the Giants in 1984 and later served as a first base and hitting coach between 1988 and 1992. He was hired as the team manager in 1993 and spent a decade in the position, compiling an 840- 715 record and reaching the World Series in 2002.

During his managerial stint with the Giants, Baker had a poor relationship with owner Peter Magowan, causing the team not to renew his contract. He would go on to manage the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Houston Astros.

Baker spent the past four seasons with the Astros, making the playoffs in each one of them. Under Baker, Houston won three AL West titles, made two World Series trips, and won a World Series in 2022.

The Giants will now hope that Baker’s legendary status in the game can help them turn around the franchise’s fortunes. The San Francisco team has only one playoff appearance since 2017 while finishing the last season with a 79-83 record.

The Houston Astros believe their manager Dusty Baker has some unfinished business after a tough 2021 World Series loss earlier this week. This is why the franchise decided to give him a new one-year deal and have the 72-year-old back in the dugout for 2022.

The Astros confirmed the news on their social media on Friday.

In a team-released statement, the team’s owner Jim Crane said that the franchise is “very, very excited” to have Baker back.

“He’s done a great job this last year,” Crane added. “Great in the locker room, great with the fans, great with the media.”

Baker took over as the Astros manager ahead of the shortened 2020 MLB season after AJ Hinch was fired for his role in the team’s notorious sign-stealing scandal. He was hired in part due to his ability to provide steady leadership, and he delivered in that regard while also having Houston playing some great baseball.

This was especially the case in 2021 when the Astros blitzed to the AL West title and then cruised to a World Series appearance. Still, they couldn’t make the final step and ended up losing to the Atlanta Braves in six games.

“Looking forward to being part of this organization and this city,” Baker said in a statement. “I have some tremendous ties here and have some unfinished business to take care of. But we’re close. We’re getting better and better every year.”

Dusty Baker previously also managed the San Francisco Giants, the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Cubs, and the Washington Nationals. He was honored with the NL Manager of the Year award three times, while his 1,987 career wins currently rank at number 12 for most in MLB history.

According to multiple sources, the Houston Astros have settled on a well-known choice as the new manager of their team.

Dusty Baker, the veteran MLB manager who has previously had stints with the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Washington Nationals, will take over the Houston Astros’ bench after a sign-stealing scandal that has shaken the club to its core.

AJ Hinch, the team’s former manager, was dismissed along with former general manager Jeff Luhnow after an MLB investigation implicated them as the ringleaders of a cheating scandal over the past few seasons.

Baker, who will become MLB’s oldest manager at the age of 70, has a history of success in the big leagues. Employing an “old-school” approach, the California native has compiled an 1863-1636 (.532) record in 22 seasons as a manager at the Major League level.

Despite his teams qualifying for the playoffs a total of 9 times during his years as a manager, Baker has yet to win a World Series. The closest he has come was with the 2002 San Francisco Giants, who lost the World Series in a heartbreaking 4-3 series loss to the Anaheim Angels.

Baker’s Astros will be expected to contend for the World Series in 2020 and in the near future, giving the long-time manager a chance to go out as a champion before his eventual retirement.
