It’s always a special moment when a player decides to hang up his hat after a legendary career. Such was the case when legendary Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia decided to retire after serving a very respectable 14 years in the MLB.

He was originally drafted in 2004 in the 2nd round by the Red Sox, but it wasn’t clear how good he was going to be. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that this youngster was the real deal.

By the time he had made his official MLB debut in 2006, he was their starting second baseman, and for good reason. His rookie season saw him average .317 at the plate, earning him AL Rookie of the Year honors. To round everything out, he helped the Red Sox win the World Series that year too.

By the time the 2008 season rolled around, Pedroia was so good that he managed to win the AL MVP award. Throughout his career, he also managed to make four All-Star teams and win four Gold Glove awards.

Unfortunately, the tail end of his career was riddled with injury problems, which is the primary reason for his retirement.

Nevertheless, the Red Sox organization and fans alike will be sure to give him a respectable and proper send-off.

After a long and successful career at second base for the Boston Red Sox, it appears that team legend Dustin Pedroia might not ever be able to return to the baseball field.

Pedroia told reporters on Monday that he had suffered another setback in the rehabilitation of his left knee and that he was going to take an indefinite break from rehabbing.

When directly asked if he’d ever be able to return to the game, Pedroia replied that he didn’t know.

This news could mean that Pedroia’s career has come to a close.

In response to the news, Boston transferred Pedroia to the 60-day Injured List in order to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster.

Pedroia’s left knee has constantly given him problems since the 2016 season when he underwent the first of three surgeries to try to repair the damage. The diminutive second baseman was able to play in 105 games in the 2017 season after undergoing the procedure, but he’s only played in 9 Major League games during the past two seasons. Pedroia only lasted until April 16th this season, when he was transferred to the injured list with knee inflammation after appearing in only six games.

If this is, in fact, the end of the road for Pedroia, he will have had a spectacular career with the Sox. Pedroia won 3 World Series rings during his career with Boston, batting .299 with 140 home runs and 138 stolen bases in 13 seasons with the team.

Pedroia was named the MVP of the American League in 2008 and was recognized as an All-Star four times in his career.

Now, fans will have to wait and see if Pedroia is able to make a miraculous return to the field after he spends some time away from the game and rehabbing his injury.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia won’t be playing baseball anymore this year. Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora confirmed this to the reporters before the Friday’s game with the Houston Astros. Pedroia, who was dealing with knee issues through the entire season, played only three games in MLB this year.

We went through all the steps during the whole year … But we ran out of time. We’ve got to take care of the individual. … He’s OK with the decision … He’ll be ready for next year, no doubt about it,” – Cora told reporters.

Dustin Pedroia started Red Sox’s 2018 season on the disabled list after knee surgery in late 2017. He returned to the active roster in May, but after playing three games, he was deactivated due to inflammation in the left knee. The 35-year-old then underwent additional arthroscopic surgery in July and was reportedly making good progress.

He’s saying that he’s getting close but he’s not there. He understands that there’s no other place to build up, get innings, get at-bats, running the bases,” – Cora added.

Despite his inability to contribute, Pedroia will stay with the team until the end of the regular season and maybe even for the Red Sox’ playoff run.

Dustin Pedroia spent his entire MLB career with the Boston Red Sox, making his debut in 2006. During his 13 years in the league, Pedroia won two World Series with the Red Sox while receiving four All-Star selections and being named 2008 AL Most Valuable Player award winner in the process. He also earned four Gold Glove Awards and a one Silver Slugger award.

Pedroia’s MLB career stats include .300 batting average, 140 home runs, and 724 RBI.
