Legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees might still be in the NFL if it wasn’t for a right arm issue that is preventing him from throwing the football. Brees revealed this in a recent chat with ESPN.

Brees decided to retire from professional football after the 2020 season and resisted the temptation to return to the game despite having several offers to do so. As it turns out, the Super Bowl XLIV MVP didn’t’ walk away because he lacked the desire to continue playing.

“Look, I’ll let you in on a little fact,” Brees told ESPN. “I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed.”

According to Brees, his right arm issues resulted from a severe shoulder injury he suffered in 2005 as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers. While the surgery allowed him to continue playing on a high level, the injury put him “on the fast track to a degenerative shoulder and all kind of arthritic changes.” If it wasn’t for the right-arm issues, Brees “would absolutely still be playing.”

Drew Brees retired with a resume that guarantees he will become a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Aside from leading the Saints to a Super Bowl, he also received 13 Pro Bowl nods and owns a number of NFL passing records.

Don’t be surprised if Drew Brees takes out a page from Tom Brady’s book and unretires. When discussing his future on Twitter, the legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback said he’s undecided and “may play football again.”

Brees retired after the 2020 NFL season and then spent the past year working as a football analyst for NBC. The 43-year-old player struggled in his new role, which saw him focus on studio work instead of his preferred choice of calling games. As a result, the two sides decided to “mutually” part ways ahead of the 2022 campaign.

The breakup prompted several rumors about Brees’ future, so the future Hall of Famer decided to address them on social media.

“Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided,” Brees wrote on Twitter. “I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids, or all of the above. I’ll let you know.”

Of course, the most interesting part of this tweet is the possibility of Brees playing football again. While this got fans in New Orleans salivating, the Saints’ brass isn’t convinced that this is an option.

“I think it was a comment made in jest, and we certainly haven’t had any conversations in that regard,” said the new Saints’ head coach Dennis Allen when asked about the news.

The New Orleans Saints are already committed to Jaemis Winston as their No. 1 QB, but there is no doubt that they would jump on a chance to have Drew Brees under center once again in a heartbeat. Brees is the franchise’s best player of all time and has led the Saints to Super Bowl XLIV win, their first in history. He also holds almost every franchise passing record imaginable.

In a widely anticipated move, quarterback Drew Brees has announced his retirement from the NFL. Brees, who played 20 seasons in the league with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints, broke the news on his official Instagram profile.

The announcement included a clip of Brees’ kids—Baylen, Bowen, Callen, and Rylen—who were overjoyed that their dad will spend more time at home.

Brees also added a lengthy caption in which he delivered an emotional goodbye to the Saints organization.

“I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans,” Brees added. “This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

Drew Brees started his career as the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2001. He spent five years in San Diego, four of which he was a starter, before hitting free agency. The Chargers came in with a low offer to keep him and already had Philip Rivers on the roster, so Brees decided to sign with the Saints.

In New Orleans, Brees established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV win while winning numerous individual accolades and honors, including 12 Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections.

Brees also set several NFL records in a Saints jersey, including most career passing yards (80,358), most career passing completions (7,142), and highest career completion percentage (67.69).

Despite retiring, Brees will remain involved in football, having already agreed to serve as an analyst for NBC.

Brees’ departure leaves a big void on the quarterback position for the New Orleans Saints. The franchise is expected to turn to either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston as a starter for 2021, although it wouldn’t be surprising if they make a run for another signal-caller either via draft or free agency.

ESPN has been trying to find the right lineup for their Monday Night Football program since Jon Gruden’s departure but didn’t manage to find the proper fit so far. The network now decided to get creative, and reportedly started pursuing New Orleans Saints’ QB Drew Brees.

According to multiple reports, ESPN is trying to get Brees to join MNF once he retires from the NFL. ESPN is hoping this might happen as soon as next year and is willing to offer a $7 million per year contract to the 41-year-old. Reportedly, there are several other networks chasing Brees, including FOX and NBC, but ESPN remains the highest bidder.

Drew Brees signed a two-year, $50 million deal with the Saints this offseason, but 2020 could easily be his last year in the league. If Saints manage to win the Super Bowl, Brees will almost certainly retire, but if they come close and fail, there is a belief he might give it another try.

Despite his age and finger injury, Brees played very well last season, completing 74.3 percent of his passes for 2,979 yards and 27 touchdowns. Things didn’t work out well for the Saints in the playoffs, however, as they lost to Minnesota Vikings.

Besides Brees, ESPN pursued a number of other NFL legends in the attempt to fix their Monday Night Football problems. The network first tried to get former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos’ QB Peyton Manning, but the five-time NFL MVP rejected the offer. They also pursued former Dallas Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo, but he ended up staying with CBS on a record-breaking 10-year, $180 million deal.
