In a widely anticipated move, quarterback Drew Brees has announced his retirement from the NFL. Brees, who played 20 seasons in the league with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints, broke the news on his official Instagram profile.

The announcement included a clip of Brees’ kids—Baylen, Bowen, Callen, and Rylen—who were overjoyed that their dad will spend more time at home.

Brees also added a lengthy caption in which he delivered an emotional goodbye to the Saints organization.

“I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans,” Brees added. “This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

Drew Brees started his career as the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2001. He spent five years in San Diego, four of which he was a starter, before hitting free agency. The Chargers came in with a low offer to keep him and already had Philip Rivers on the roster, so Brees decided to sign with the Saints.

In New Orleans, Brees established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV win while winning numerous individual accolades and honors, including 12 Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections.

Brees also set several NFL records in a Saints jersey, including most career passing yards (80,358), most career passing completions (7,142), and highest career completion percentage (67.69).

Despite retiring, Brees will remain involved in football, having already agreed to serve as an analyst for NBC.

Brees’ departure leaves a big void on the quarterback position for the New Orleans Saints. The franchise is expected to turn to either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston as a starter for 2021, although it wouldn’t be surprising if they make a run for another signal-caller either via draft or free agency.

New Orleans Saints trashed Indianapolis Colts on Monday night, but this game won’t be remembered for its 34-7 score. Instead, it will be remembered as the game in which Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees broke Peyton Manning’s career touchdowns record.

Brees entered the Colts’ game with 537 career touchdowns, needing two to tie the record and three to surpass it. The 40-year-old did that and then some, ending the night with four TDs and adding another record to his resume.

But, the record-breaking night didn’t stop at TD records for Brees. He also finished the game by being almost perfect on his passes. He attempted 30 passes and completed 29 of them for a jaw-dropping 96.7 percent completion. This is the highest completion percentage in NFL history for 20+ passes.

“Listen, it was special, everything about the night,” said Brees after the game. “I don’t know how they pick ’em. Monday Night Football, playing the Colts, the team that we won the Super Bowl against 10 years ago. So the whole Super Bowl XLIV team is back for the 10th anniversary. And, obviously, national television, big game, and now that record in the balance, as well. It just kind of makes you shake your head. ‘Are you kidding me?'”

Drew Brees is having another impressive season in 2019, completing 75.8 percent of his passes for 2,447 yards and 21 TDs. These numbers would be even more impressive, but Brees was forced to sit out five games earlier this season due to a hand injury.

Saints are now hoping that Brees can continue with great performances as they are currently involved in a tough battle for NFC’s top seed. New Orleans is at 11-3, sharing the same record with three other teams. They are scheduled to take on Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers before 2019 NFL regular season wraps up.

As of Monday night, New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees is the new NFL’s All-Time Passing leader. In the 43-19 win over Washington Redskins, Brees had 363 passing yards, bringing his career total to 72,103 yards. Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning held the previous record with 71,940 passing yards.

Drew Brees’ achievement is even more spectacular when you consider the way he managed to reach it. The 39-year-old broke the 71,940 mark with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Quan Smith. He also completed 26 of 29 passes for the game, posting his career-best completion percentage of 89.7.

It played out even greater than I ever could’ve imagined,” – said Brees after the game.

NFL’s All-Time Passing leader is one of the many records Brees managed to break during his 18-years-in the league. He currently also holds records for most career pass completions, most pass completions in a season, highest single-season completion percentage, most consecutive games with a touchdown pass among others. But the 39-year-old doesn’t intend to stop there.

It’s hard for me to reflect too much right now because my career’s not done,” – he added. “There are still goals to be accomplished, there are still challenges to be met. So I’m still very focused on that. And yet when something like this happens, and there’s so many people that are responsible for that, that can be a part of that, that makes me happy.”

During his time in NFL, Drew Brees managed to win one Super Bowl title while being named to Pro Bowl 11 times. He was also named NFL Offensive Player of the Year two times and has one First-Team All-Pro selection. Brees’ career stats include 6,344 completed passes out of 9,455 for 72,103 yards and 499 touchdowns.
