Legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees might still be in the NFL if it wasn’t for a right arm issue that is preventing him from throwing the football. Brees revealed this in a recent chat with ESPN.

Brees decided to retire from professional football after the 2020 season and resisted the temptation to return to the game despite having several offers to do so. As it turns out, the Super Bowl XLIV MVP didn’t’ walk away because he lacked the desire to continue playing.

“Look, I’ll let you in on a little fact,” Brees told ESPN. “I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed.”

According to Brees, his right arm issues resulted from a severe shoulder injury he suffered in 2005 as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers. While the surgery allowed him to continue playing on a high level, the injury put him “on the fast track to a degenerative shoulder and all kind of arthritic changes.” If it wasn’t for the right-arm issues, Brees “would absolutely still be playing.”

Drew Brees retired with a resume that guarantees he will become a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Aside from leading the Saints to a Super Bowl, he also received 13 Pro Bowl nods and owns a number of NFL passing records.

Don’t be surprised if Drew Brees takes out a page from Tom Brady’s book and unretires. When discussing his future on Twitter, the legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback said he’s undecided and “may play football again.”

Brees retired after the 2020 NFL season and then spent the past year working as a football analyst for NBC. The 43-year-old player struggled in his new role, which saw him focus on studio work instead of his preferred choice of calling games. As a result, the two sides decided to “mutually” part ways ahead of the 2022 campaign.

The breakup prompted several rumors about Brees’ future, so the future Hall of Famer decided to address them on social media.

“Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided,” Brees wrote on Twitter. “I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids, or all of the above. I’ll let you know.”

Of course, the most interesting part of this tweet is the possibility of Brees playing football again. While this got fans in New Orleans salivating, the Saints’ brass isn’t convinced that this is an option.

“I think it was a comment made in jest, and we certainly haven’t had any conversations in that regard,” said the new Saints’ head coach Dennis Allen when asked about the news.

The New Orleans Saints are already committed to Jaemis Winston as their No. 1 QB, but there is no doubt that they would jump on a chance to have Drew Brees under center once again in a heartbeat. Brees is the franchise’s best player of all time and has led the Saints to Super Bowl XLIV win, their first in history. He also holds almost every franchise passing record imaginable.

In a widely anticipated move, quarterback Drew Brees has announced his retirement from the NFL. Brees, who played 20 seasons in the league with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints, broke the news on his official Instagram profile.

The announcement included a clip of Brees’ kids—Baylen, Bowen, Callen, and Rylen—who were overjoyed that their dad will spend more time at home.

Brees also added a lengthy caption in which he delivered an emotional goodbye to the Saints organization.

“I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans,” Brees added. “This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

Drew Brees started his career as the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2001. He spent five years in San Diego, four of which he was a starter, before hitting free agency. The Chargers came in with a low offer to keep him and already had Philip Rivers on the roster, so Brees decided to sign with the Saints.

In New Orleans, Brees established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He led the Saints to a Super Bowl XLIV win while winning numerous individual accolades and honors, including 12 Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pro selections.

Brees also set several NFL records in a Saints jersey, including most career passing yards (80,358), most career passing completions (7,142), and highest career completion percentage (67.69).

Despite retiring, Brees will remain involved in football, having already agreed to serve as an analyst for NBC.

Brees’ departure leaves a big void on the quarterback position for the New Orleans Saints. The franchise is expected to turn to either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston as a starter for 2021, although it wouldn’t be surprising if they make a run for another signal-caller either via draft or free agency.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees returned to the field on Sunday after missing four games due to broken ribs, but it wasn’t the comeback everyone expected. Brees struggled to find a rhythm for the better part of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, which ultimately contributed to the Saints losing the contest 32-29.

Brees opened the game with five incompletions, which was the first time in his NFL career that he didn’t manage to complete a pass in the first five tries. He also struggled on first downs, as the Saints managed to convert just one in the entire game.

The 41-year-old QB improved towards the end of the contest, but it was too late to challenge the reigning Super Bowl champs at that point.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Brees admitted that he is still not fully healthy but believes he will get there soon.

“I’ll be honest. I think there’s some things that I’m still kind of working on. But it is what it is,” said Brees, who finished the contest with 234 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

With this loss, the New Orleans Saints find themselves in a tough position to return to the top of the NFC and earn a bye in the first week of playoffs. The Saints’ only chance to get there now is if they win the rest of their games, along with the Green Bay Packers losing the rest of theirs.

New Orleans Saints haven’t skipped a beat since their starting quarterback Drew Brees underwent thumb surgery in September. With Teddy Bridgewater under center, Saints went 5-0 and they looked like one of the best teams in the NFL. Still, Brees doesn’t intend to take his time returning from the injury.

Speaking with reporters after Wednesday’s practice, Brees said that he plans to play on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“That’s the plan,” – said Brees when asked whether he will be on the field this week. “We’ll see.”

Saints’ head coach Sean Payton, on the other hand, said that he would make his decision on the game day.

Brees suffered the thumb injury in Week 2 game against Los Angeles Rams and had to undergo surgery in order to repair the ligament damage. He was scheduled to return in six to eight weeks, but the Saints opted against placing him on IR.

In Bress’ absence, Bridgewater put on some spectacular performances. In five games he started, he completed 67.7% of his passes, throwing for 1,370 yards and nine touchdowns.

New Orleans Saints’ quest to get to the Super Bowl this season might be in danger. Saints’ starting quarterback Drew Brees suffered a thumb injury in Sunday’s 27-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and is facing significant downtime.

Brees suffered the injury during the Saints’ second drive of the game when he attempted a pass to tight end Jared Cook. After launching the ball, Brees was hit in the hand by Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and was forced to exit the game. He was later seen on the sideline unsuccessfully attempting to grip the ball.

According to NFL Network, Brees will now have to undergo a thumb surgery which will sideline him at least six to eight weeks.

Saints’ head coach Sean Payton didn’t want to confirm these reports during a conference call with reporters, but did say that Brees will ask for a second opinion and try to choose an option that will make him miss the least amount of time possible.

Although New Orleans Saints will definitely feel the absence of Drew Brees, things are not as bad as they seem. Saints’ have a capable reserve QB in Teddy Bridgewater, having signed him to a one-year deal worth $7.5 million in the offseason. This made Bridgewater the highest-paid backup in the NFL, but New Orleans believes he is worth every penny. It’s now up to him to prove it.

In the game against the Rams, Bridgewater threw for 165 yards while failing to lead the team to a touchdown. He is 17-12 as a starter during his NLF career.

As of Monday night, New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees is the new NFL’s All-Time Passing leader. In the 43-19 win over Washington Redskins, Brees had 363 passing yards, bringing his career total to 72,103 yards. Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning held the previous record with 71,940 passing yards.

Drew Brees’ achievement is even more spectacular when you consider the way he managed to reach it. The 39-year-old broke the 71,940 mark with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Quan Smith. He also completed 26 of 29 passes for the game, posting his career-best completion percentage of 89.7.

It played out even greater than I ever could’ve imagined,” – said Brees after the game.

NFL’s All-Time Passing leader is one of the many records Brees managed to break during his 18-years-in the league. He currently also holds records for most career pass completions, most pass completions in a season, highest single-season completion percentage, most consecutive games with a touchdown pass among others. But the 39-year-old doesn’t intend to stop there.

It’s hard for me to reflect too much right now because my career’s not done,” – he added. “There are still goals to be accomplished, there are still challenges to be met. So I’m still very focused on that. And yet when something like this happens, and there’s so many people that are responsible for that, that can be a part of that, that makes me happy.”

During his time in NFL, Drew Brees managed to win one Super Bowl title while being named to Pro Bowl 11 times. He was also named NFL Offensive Player of the Year two times and has one First-Team All-Pro selection. Brees’ career stats include 6,344 completed passes out of 9,455 for 72,103 yards and 499 touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield is still to play a regular season game in the NFL, but there is already a lot of praise coming his way. The latest one came from New Orleans Saints’ QB Drew Brees, who went as far as telling the reporters that Mayfield can be “a lot better” football player than him.

I think he can be a lot better than me,” – said Brees off Mayfield.

While some might be skeptical about Drew Brees’ evaluation of Browns’ rookie, it looks like the 39-year-old knows what he is talking about.

Man, he’s got all the tools,” – Brees explained. “He’s more athletic. He probably can run around better. He’s got a stronger arm.

I followed his college career. Couldn’t have been more impressed with what he was able to accomplish, especially last year. Really impressed with the way he plays the game. I think he’s a great competitor.” – he added.

Cleveland Browns would surely like Drew Brees to be right about Baker Mayfield, their first overall pick in the 2018 draft. Brees is a potential first ballot Hall of Famer, who won the Super Bowl and was named the Super Bowl MVP while earning 11 Pro-Bowl selections during his NFL career. He also threw for 70,884 yards and completed 67 percent of his passes over the course of 18 years spent in the league. Brees will look to add some more yardage on Sunday when he faces the Browns.

Although it would be a great story, Baker Mayfield won’t face him on the other side. Cleveland Browns are still playing it slow with Mayfield, and he will remain a backup to Tyrod Taylor for the better part of the season. So, the Browns’ fans will have to wait a bit longer to see whether they have a Drew Brees’ caliber player orchestrating their offense, or Mayfield will be just another bust.
