He was non-committal, saying that he prefers to focus on other things and that he’ll “handle that” when the time comes.

“I’ve got a lot of things to focus on outside of that right now. I’ve got to focus on myself, getting back for this group, focus on us getting over this stretch, continuing to be ready when it comes time,” Mitchell said. “So, I’ll handle that when it comes. I understand you gotta ask that question, and I’ll give you the same answer.”

On the other hand, the Cavaliers seem optimistic about their chances of keeping Mitchell with the franchise for years to come. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert recently said that the franchise has already been talking with Mitchell about a new deal and that they believe he will remain in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Tuesday that their star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell underwent a medical procedure to fix a nasal fracture he suffered last week. 

Mitchell was injured during a 117-103 loss to the Houston Rockets on March 16 after bumping into his teammate Tristan Thompson. According to the Cavs, Mitchell will be reevaluated in one week, after which his status will be updated. 

Mitchell has been struggling with injuries in 2023-24, missing a total of 19 games so far. He was previously out for a seven-game stretch earlier this month due to a bone bruise in his left knee. The game against the Rockets was only his second after returning to action.

When healthy, Mitchell has been the best player on the Cavaliers’ roster by far. Before going down with a nasal fracture, he was averaging 27.4 points and career highs in rebounds (5.3), assists (6.1), and steals (1.8).
