The New York Knicks have emerged as top contenders in the Donovan Mitchell sweepstakes as soon as the Utah Jazz made the All-Star guard available in trade talks. However, it appears that the Knicks aren’t willing to “sell the house” to bring the New York state native to the Garden.

A recent report from The Athletic‘s Tony Jones says that the Knicks are discouraged in their pursuit of Mitchell after learning about Jazz’s asking price. It appears that Utah wants to top the Rudy Gobert trade, which essentially saw them get five first-rounders, and then some.

Jones reports that Jazz wants six first-round picks from the Knicks while also requiring the NY team to include several young players in the deal. The list reportedly includes Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, and Miles McBride. As things currently stand, this is too steep of a price for the Knicks, and Utah will have to come down significantly before a deal is possible.

Several other teams have been engaged with Jazz to test the possibility of trading for Donovan Mitchell. The Miami Heat are mentioned as the most likely destination for the 25-year-old player besides the Knicks, with teams like the New Orleans Pelicans also being interested. However, none have been willing to commit to the type of offer Utah is asking.

Mitchell made his third consecutive All-Star appearance in 2021-22 after averaging 25.9 points and 4.2 rebounds. He also had career-high 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals.

After the Utah Jazz decided to trade their star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this month, many people assumed the franchise would use the acquired assets to build around All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday that the Jazz are taking calls on Mitchell and are interested in moving him for the right offer. This comes after the rival executives were told that Mitchell is unavailable in the aftermath of the Gobert.

Moving Mitchell isn’t something that the Jazz are probably taking lightly, but it looks like the franchise has finally set the course for a rebuild. The organization already sent signals over the weekend that anyone and everyone on their roster is available.

“Things evolve in the NBA, so I couldn’t sit here and say anybody is [untouchable],” said Jazz’s general manager Justin Zanik during a press conference on Sunday when asked if Mitchell is “untouchable” in trade talks.

Donovan Mitchell was initially drafted into the league by the Denver Nuggets with the No. 13 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft before being traded to the Jazz on the draft night. This proved to be an outstanding piece of business for Utah as Mitchell immediately established himself as one of the team’s best players.

During his five seasons in the league, Mitchell made three All-Star teams and never had less than 20.5 points per game on average in a season. He finished the 2021-22 campaign by averaging 25.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and career-high 5.3 assists per contest.

Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell delivered another 50+ game in the First Rounds series against the Denver Nuggets, but this time, it was enough for his team to get a win. Mitchell scored 51 points on Sunday night to give Jazz a 129-127 win and a 3-1 lead in the series.

With this electric performance, Mitchell not only put his team in a great position to advance to the Second Round but also got his name alongside a pair of Hall of Famers. The 23-year-old guard became just the third player, alongside Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson, to have multiple 50+ games in a single postseason. His first came in Game 1’s 135-125 overtime loss when he scored in 57 points.

Mitchell was especially great in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 out of Jazz’s final 20 points and holding off Nuggets, who were trying to get back into the game and were just one point behind on several occasions.

“I love hearing negative things [said] about me,” said Mitchell. “The knock on me has been inefficient, not a team player, whatever it is. I pride myself on being a team player, on being a playmaker. I’ve said it a thousand times, and I am going to continue to do that… Fifty is what it is, but I am more happy that I got seven assists.”

Denver was led by another spectacular young guard in Jamal Murray. Murray put up an almost equally impressive performance in trying to shoulder his team to a win, scoring 50 points. This was most points by a player in a single postseason game in the franchise’s history.

But not even a historic performance was enough for Nuggets to get the win, and Murray isn’t ready to give up just yet. “There’s a lot of fight in us left,” said Murray. “One game at a time.”

It seems like All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell will remain with Utah Jazz for a foreseeable future. According to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, Mitchell and Jazz are bound to agree to a max contract extension in the near future.

Jones reports that Mitchell is “genuinely loves playing for the Jazz,” and that the 23-year-old will ink a new deal with the franchise “at some point before next season.” The exact timeline is unclear mostly due to the fact that the current NBA season has been suspended due to coronavirus.

Mitchell played 63 games so far in 2019/20, averaging career-high 24.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game alongside 4.1 assists and 1.0 steals. He made his first All-Star team this season as well, making the cut as a Western Conference reserve.

Utah Jazz will most likely jump on the opportunity to tie their franchise cornerstone to a long-term deal after learning their lesson with Gordon Hayward. Jazz allowed Hayward to hit the restricted free agency without offering him a deal in 2014, and only decided to retain him after Charlotte Hornets offered him a max contract. Hayward remembered this and didn’t even consider Utah in 2017 when he became an unrestricted free agent.

Rookie Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz is going to replace Orlando Magic’s Aaron Gordon in the upcoming NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest. Gordon, 2016’s Slam Dunk Contest runner-up, had to withdraw himself from the competition due to a hip injury. Mitchell will now go against Dallas Mavericks’ rookie Dennis Smith Jr., Indiana Pacers’ guard Victor Oladipo and Los Angeles Lakers’ forward Larry Nance Jr. for the prestigious title of NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion.

When I found out, I was excited,” – said Mitchell to the reporters on Monday. “I have a couple of ideas. I’ve been googling YouTube and watching old dunk contests. I’m definitely excited to participate.

Donovan Mitchell caught everyone’s attention this season with impressive performances for the Jazz. He has been averaging 19.7 points, 3.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game so far and established himself as one of the top Rookie of the Year candidates. He also added two 40 point performances in the process.

Mitchell played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals, averaging 15.6 points, 2.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game in his sophomore season. He entered the 2017 NBA Draft, where he was taken by Denver Nuggets with the 13th overall pick. On the draft night, Nuggets traded Mitchell to the Utah Jazz in exchange for a 24th pick and Trey Lyles. In the game against the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2017 NBA Summer League, Mitchell immediately showed promise by dropping 37 points, more than any rookie in that year’s summer league. During the course of the season, he has also broken several records including Karl Malone’s record for most 20+ games for a rookie with 19.
