Zverev opened the match with confidence, and cruised to 6-2 win in the first set, and closed out the second with 6-4. Thiem then cleaned up his game, got more confidence in his serve, and rallied back to even the score with 6-4 and 6-3 wins.

The fifth and final set saw even more excitement, as both players had a chance to serve for the Championship. Zverev got his at 5-3 lead, but couldn’t close out the match, while Thiem missed on the same opportunity having 6-5 lead.

Ultimately, it all got down to a tiebreaker. Zverev got to a 2-0 lead, but a couple of his double faults allowed Thiem an opportunity to get an edge in the decisive moments. The Austrian seized it and closed out the tiebreaker, thanks to a backhand error from Zverev.

“It’s amazing how far away our journey brought us to share this moment with you, and really I wish for you we could have two winners today,” said Thiem after the match. “We both deserved it. You’re going to make it 100 percent. You’re going to make your parents proud, your family proud at home.”

For Dominic Thiem, the Grand Slam win was a long time coming. Between 2016 and 2019, he got more ATP wins than any other pro. He also played three Grand Slam finals before, but couldn’t get over the hump, losing two times at French Open to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

However, Nadal didn’t come to the US Open due to coronavirus concerns while Djokovic was defaulted, opening the way for Thiem to finally claim a deserved win at a major tournament. And, in a memorable fashion, claimed he did.

In the process, the Spanish tennis star extended his previous record of 11 French Open wins. No other player in the history of the prestigious tournament has won more than 8.

Nadal didn’t have it easy against the 25-year-old Austrian on Sunday. Things even looked a bit questionable for the clay court expert after Thiem roared back after a first set loss to beat Nadal in the second set.

However, after this small blip, the Mallorca native stormed back to win the next two sets and the championship. He did it once again, winning the 18th Grand Slam tournament of his career.

His mastery of the French Open has no other parallel in men’s tennis history. No other player has matched his 12 wins at Ronald Garros in any major tournament.

The win was important for Nadal, who will continue to be ranked as the second-best player in the world behind Novak Djokovic.

Dominic Thiem surprised the tennis world by defeating Roger Federer to win the ATP Indian Wells Masters event on Sunday.

Thiem, a 25-year-old Austrian, mounted a comeback to beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and win his first ATP Masters 1000 final.

Federer lost his second consecutive final at the Indian Wells event after losing to Juan Martin del Potro in 2018.

Believe it or not, with his win, Thiem takes over the 4th place rank in the men’s singles rankings. Federer falls to #5.

Thiem fought back after dropping the first set 3-6 to the Swiss tennis giant. He won the next two sets to claim the title.

Thiem, whose previous claim to fame was reaching the 2018 French Open final before losing to Rafael Nadal, garnered the first major tournament win of his career with the victory.

The Austrian will look to build on his success at the 2019 edition of the French Open which begins in late May.

Spaniard, who is currently No.1 tennis player in the world, has a chance to win his 11th French Open title, since he advanced to the final 10 times before and won each time.

His opponent, No.8 tennis player in the world, Austrian Dominic Thiem, faced 72nd-ranked Marco Cecchinato in the semi-final match and booked his place in the final with 7-5, 7-6 (10), 6-1 win. This was Thiem’s third consecutive French Open semi-final match but first, win. As a matter of fact, this will be the first time for Thiem to advance in final of any Grand Slam tournament.

Despite facing a rather inexperienced opponent, Nadal was full of respect.

“He’s an amazing player,” – said Nadal of Thiem. “He’s a player with big power. He’s playing with big confidence. … I know I have to play at my best. I know I have to improve a little bit.“

Thiem spoke about Nadal in a similar manner but said he isn’t afraid to take on the challenge.

“He’s a big favorite against everybody,” – said Thiem of Nadal. “Still, I know how to play against him. I have a plan.”
