The jersey worn by legendary Argentinian forward Diego Maradona in a 2-1 win against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals has been sold for $9.28 million. Maradona scored both goals for Argentina in that game including his “Hand of God” goal.

Auction house Sotheby’s confirmed the sale on Wednesday. According to their official announcement, Maradona’s jersey is now the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia in the world. The previous record was held by 1892’s original Olympic Games Manifesto which fetched $8.8 million back in 2019.

The two goals Diego Maradona scored in this jersey are considered among the most iconic ever scored on the soccer field. The first was nicknamed “Hand of God” as Maradona used his left hand to get the ball past England’s goalie Peter Shilton. Despite this being against soccer rules, the goal was allowed as the referee believed Maradona scored a header.

The second goal was nicknamed The Goal of the Century and is now considered arguably the greatest solo effort in history. Just four minutes after “Hand of God,” Maradona took the ball inside his own half, dribbled through the entire England squad, fainted Shilton, and delivered the ball into the net.

After the match was concluded, England international Steve Hodge swapped jerseys with Maradona. He kept it in his possession until 2002 when he loaned it to the National Football Museum. Hodge announced his intention to sell the jersey in early April after previously refusing multiple bids from prospective buyers.

Legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Armando Maradona has died at the age of 60. According to multiple reports, Maradona’s death resulted from a heart attack he suffered on Wednesday.

The news was confirmed by the Argentine national team and Argentina President Alberto Fernandez, who announced a mourning period of three days in the country to honor Maradona.

Numerous of Maradona’s peers, friends, acquaintances, and fans went to social media to express their tribute shortly after the news broke. This included Brazil legend Pele, who was considered Maradona’s biggest rival for the “greatest of all-time” title.

Diego Maradona started his professional career in his native Argentina with Argentinos Junior before embarking on stints with some of the world’s biggest clubs, including Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Napoli.

He was also a member of Argentina’s national team for more than 15 years, leading the country to a FIFA World Cup win in 1986 as a captain.

During his playing career, Maradona was known for his dribbling ability, vision, creativity, and scoring prowess despite not playing the striker position. This, combined with his charismatic personality and leadership skills, helped him cement his place in the history of soccer and get recognized as one of the best to play the game.

Since ending his playing career, Maradona remained included in soccer, working in the front office and as a manager. He coached Argentina’s national team between 2008 and 2010, while his most recent stint was with Gimnasia de La Plata.

Argentina’s soccer legend Diego Maradona will continue coaching in his home country for at least one more season. Primera División side Gimnasia announced on Wednesday that Maradona agreed on an extension with the club, and will serve as their manager in 2020/21 as well.

Maradona’s decision to remain with Gimnasia comes after the club managed to remain in the country’s top division thanks to Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) decision to suspended relegation rules for two seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gimnasia confirmed the news of Maradona’s extension via social media.

Diego Maradona took over Gimnasia at the beginning of the 2019/20 season and was scheduled with the task to get the club back on track after four losses in first five games. And while Maradona failed to get Gimnasia out of relegation zone before the first part of the season concluded, he did a solid job with seven wins and four draws in 20 games.

Thanks to AFA’s decision, the legendary striker now gets a chance to start fresh with Gimnasia and try to return the club to its former glory.

Prior to taking over Gimnasia, Maradona managed Textil Mandiyú, Racing Club, Al-Wasl, Fujairah, and Dorados. He was also the manager of Argentina’s national team between 2008 and 2010.

Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona has a new job. After quitting leaving Mexican second division side Dorados in June, Maradona now returned to native Argentina where he will be the manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.

Gimnasia competed in Superliga Argentina and is currently on the bottom of the standings having zero wins in five games.

The club confirmed Maradona’s arrival on Thursday via a post on social media.

“Star of world football, Diego Armando Maradona, has signed his name and is the new coach of Gimnasia,”- Gimnasia said in a statement. “The deal runs until the end of the current season.”

Maradona spent the two previous two years with Dorados, managing to get the club to Ascenso MX finals for two consecutive seasons. He decided to depart the club in order to undergo knee surgery, with both sides expressing interest in continuing to work together after that. Things changed, however, when Gimnasia called, and Maradona decided to return to the homeland.

This won’t be Diego Maradona’s first managerial stint in Argentina, as he briefly coached clubs Mandiyú de Corrientes and Racing Club in the mid-’90s. He also served as the coach of Argentina’s national team between 2008 and 2010, leading them to a fifth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona will be coaching again. This time, Maradona made a less flashy move by agreeing to terms with Dorados, a team playing in Mexican second division. Dorados confirmed the move on their social media by posting a short video that displays messages “Welcome Diego,” and “Make it a 10.”

The reports about the possibility that Diego Maradona could take over Dorados started circling earlier this week, but the negotiations between two sides were stalled due to Maradona’s obligations to Belarus side Dynamo Brest. The 57-year-old agreed to a three-year deal to serve as Brest’s chairman back in July.

In Mexico, Maradona will be tasked with turning around Dorados’ awful start of the season which sees them tied for the last place in the league. The club fired their previous coach Francisco Gamez last week after Dorados managed to win just three out of 15 points.

While being in the conversation as the greatest soccer player of all time, Diego Maradona had a lot less successful career as a coach. After two short coaching stints with Mandiyú de Corrientes and Racing Club in the mid-nineties, Maradona went on a long break before eventually taking over Argentina’s national soccer team in 2008. He spent four years with the national team before the Argentine Football Association decided not to renew his contract despite good results. Maradona also coached in the United Arab Emirates on several occasions after that.
