Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith is officially 2020’s College Football Player of the Year according to The Associated Press.

Smith earned the award in a convincing fashion, receiving 26 first-place votes for a total of 114 points. His quarterback teammate Mac Jones finished second with 64 points, while Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence came third with 49 points.

Smith is the first wide receiver to win the award and the first Alabama player to get named as the AP’s College Football Player of the Year.

DeVonta Smith enjoyed a productive 2020 season, totaling 98 receptions for an NCAA-leading 1,511 yards. He also had 17 receiving touchdowns, which was the second-most in college football this year.

“Probably one of the most selfless guys that I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach in terms of whatever he can do to help the team, he wants to do,” said Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban.

“The guy is one of the most popular guys on the team and also one of the leaders of the team that everybody looks up to because of the example that he sets every day and how he goes about his work.”

Smith is also among the finalists for this year’s Heisman Trophy and is considered the favorite to pick up that as well. If that happens, he will become the first wide receiver since 1991 to get the Heisman.
