New England Patriots’ safety Devin McCourty decided he will play in 2019. Prior to Super Bowl LIII game against the Los Angeles Rams, McCourty told reporters he wasn’t sure whether he will retire or continue playing football if his team lifts the Vince Lombardi trophy. Now, after taking some time off to think about it, the 31-year-old is determined to extend his career for at least one more year.

“Yeah, I’m going to play,” – said McCourty during his appearance on the Sports Spectrum Podcast. “At that point, that was Media Night when Deion said that to me, and it’s like, yeah, man, if we won a Super Bowl, I don’t know what else could top that. I think in that moment I kind of forgot that I don’t play this game just to win Super Bowls.”

Devin McCourty had another solid season in 2018, playing all 16 games. He had 82 tackles, four passes defensed and one interception he returned for a touchdown. He is currently in the final year of his contract which will see him earn $9 million in base salary.

“There’s so much more that comes from me playing the game that I love. I think once you get a chance to step away for a couple weeks, you’re like, yeah, I still do want to be around these other young guys that come in.” – he added.

McCourty entered the league in 2010, when the Patriots selected him 27th overall in that year’s draft. During his time with New England, he won two Super Bowl rings while earning two Pro Bowl appearances and three Second-team All-Pro selections.

New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty will consider retiring from the NFL should his team win Sunday’s Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

McCourty, 31, has spent his entire nine-year NFL career in New England, winning two rings and racking up 714 tackles, 80 passes and 21 intercepts alongside his twin brother Jason.

“I don’t know for sure, man, but I do look at retirement,” McCourty said. “If we can win this game, win it with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that’ll top that. So I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple days with these guys.”

While the safety back has racked up enough numbers to make it to three All-Pro teams and two Pro Bowl games, his’ brother hasn’t been that lucky. Most of Jason’s time in the NFL was spent with the Titans where he logged 505 tackles, 73 defense passes, 13 interceptions and six fumbles.

Jason spent eight seasons in Tennessee before a stint with Cleveland landed him a trade with the Patriots. Luckily, New England has been good to him, appearing in 16 games and tallying 70 tackles and 10 defense passes. On Sunday, the twins will play together for the ultimate prize, and there, Devin will make a clear decision about his future in the NFL.
