Free agent right-hander Kenta Maeda agreed to a two-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, sources familiar with the matter revealed. The contract is believed to be worth $24 million.

Looking to revive his career after having Tommy John surgery, Maeda posted a 4.23 ERA in 104⅓ innings with 117 strikeouts and 28 walks during his time with the Minnesota Twins. Now entering his eighth major league season, Maeda will join the likes of left-hander Tarik Skubal, who is also returning to baseball following flexor-tendon surgery.

Detroit will be hoping that Maeda helps them to improve on their performance last season, when they went 78-84 in the American League Central. With the reigning ALC champions, Minnesota Twins expected to cut their payroll, the Tigers will hope to take advantage with their new signings including Maeda.

The Detroit Tigers released struggling veteran catcher Eric Haase on Saturday. The move was made in order to make room for catcher Carson Kelly, who signed with the team on a deal until the end of the season with an option for 2024.

Haase had a rough time at the plate this year, hitting just .201 in 86 games. He also had four homers and 26 RBIs.

Haase made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Indians in 2018 and spent two seasons with the organization before signing with the Tigers in 2020. The 30-year-old player is a Detroit native, making the decision to release him particularly tough for the organization.

“He did a lot of things for us and organization,” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch. “I was close to Eric. I think he’s terrific. He helped. It wasn’t working out here as well as it had in previous years.”

At first glance, Kelly doesn’t represent a significant upgrade over Hasse. The 29-year-old had a .226 batting average to go with one home run and six RBIs in 33 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. He was released by Arizona earlier this month.

The Tigers will likely use Kelly to take some load off of Jake Rogers, who has been the team’s No.1 choice at the catcher position in recent weeks.

The Detroit Tigers’ lefty Eduardo Rodriguez has revealed his reasons for rejecting a trade deadline move to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Rodriguez said that he doesn’t have anything against the Dodgers organization but that he and his family feel happy in Detroit and that he didn’t want to disrupt that.

The Tigers had a deal in place that would see them send Rodriguez to the Dodgers in exchange for prospects. However, the trade didn’t go through because Rodriguez used his no-trade clause.

Rodriguez received a limited no-trade clause as par to the five-year, $77 million contract he signed with the franchise in 2021. The clause gave him the option to provide a list of 10 teams he can’t be dealt to without his approval, and it turned out that the Dodgers were on it. The Tigers hoped they could convince the 30-year-old to change his mind, but their efforts were in vain.

“It’s nothing against the Dodgers or the West Coast or whatever,” Rodriguez said. “It’s just about the details to go out there and where my family is. My future is where they’re happy, and I’m happy, and that’s why I decided to stay here. It has nothing to do with the Dodgers.”

The Tigers now risk losing Rodriguez for nothing in the offseason, as he can opt out of his contract after the 2023 campaign. However, the veteran seems to be quite content to see out his deal.

“I’m with this organization, and I signed here for a long time to stay here,” Rodriguez added. “I feel happy with everything. My family feels happy in Detroit. I feel happy with the team and the organization, so I’d love to stay here.”

Left-hander Matt Boyd has returned to the Detroit Tigers after agreeing to a one-year contract with the team. The deal, worth a reported $10 million, is pending a physical.

The 31-year-old player is back with the Tigers after spending the last season at the Seattle Mariners. He was shifted to the Mariners after inking a $5.2 million deal with the San Francisco Giants.

Boyd is expected to be slotted back into the Tigers’ rotation, where he played for seven seasons. During his previous tenure with the Tigers, Boyd went 37-60 with a 4.87 ERA over 777.2 innings. This includes 137 home runs and 247 walkouts.

The return of Boyd to the Tigers’ lineup is a welcome sight in Detroit given the team’s injury-riddled pitching lineup. Former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize is sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June, while left-hander Tarik Skubal underwent flexor-tendon surgery in August. Right-hander Matt Manning was ruled out in September due to a forearm strain while fellow right-hander Spencer Turnbull is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery that he underwent in June 2021.

After heavy spending in the offseason, the Detroit Tigers have entered the 2022 MLB campaign with hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Now that it has become clear this won’t be the case, the struggling franchise is attempting to shake things up with front office changes.

The Tigers confirmed on Wednesday that the team’s vice president and general manager Al Avila had been relieved of his duties. Avila leaves the Tigers after more than 20 years with the organization and seven years as a GM.

The Tigers made a big splash in free agency, signing several high-profile players, including two-time All-Star shortstop Javier Baez and left-hand pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. However, instead of entering the playoff hunt, Detroit finds itself in a familiar place at the bottom of AL Central with a 43-68 record.

“All of us—the players, front office, and many of you (reporters)—had high expectations and excitement for the season,” Tigers’ CEO Chris Ilitch told reporters after the news was confirmed. “Unfortunately, we did not see progress this season at the major league level. A big reason why I decided it’s time to make a change.”

Al Avila joined the Tigers in 2002 as an assistant GM and vice president. He was promoted to GM in 2015 after the franchise parted ways with well-respected executive Dave Dombrowski.

Under Avila, the Tigers never made the postseason. The closest they were to playoffs was in 2016 when they finished the campaign second in AL Central with an 86-75 record.

It sure seems like lefty Eduardo Rodriguez went AWOL on the Detroit Tigers. According to the Tigers’ general manager Al Avila, Rodriguez hasn’t communicated with the team since landing on the restricted list on June 13 and the organization doesn’t know when he might be back.

While the Tiger expected Rodriguez to be on a prolonged absence due to a “personal matter,” they believed the 29-year-old to keep them in the loop about his situation. And that hasn’t happened so far.

“We’ve reached out, but obviously, he hasn’t reached out back, so we’re just kind of waiting it out,” Avila told reporters on Wednesday. “It is unusual, but we have no choice but to wait it out right now and see what develops as we move forward.”

Rodriguez joined the Tigers on a five-year, $77 million contract ahead of the 2022 MLB season. He was named the Opening Day starter and went on to play eight games before being sidelined by a rib cage injury in mid-May. The veteran is 1-3 for the season with a 4.38 ERA and 34 strikeouts.

Tigers manager AJ Hinch previously told the reporters that they want to help Rodriguez but can’t do much as the player is keeping the organization in the dark.

“We can’t really make any considerations until we know exactly what’s at hand,” said Hinch. “We’ll wait for him to open up when he wants.”

Prior to coming to Detroit, Rodriguez played six years with the Boston Red Sox. He posted a 64-39 record in Boston while helping the franchise win World Series in 2018.

The Detroit Tigers are wasting no time in building a roster that might get the franchise in contention after a series of disappointing seasons. The team announced on Wednesday that they have acquired reliable veteran catcher Tucker Barnhart in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

In order to get Barnhart, the Tigers sent infield prospect Nick Quintana in opposite direction.

Barnhart is coming to Detroit after a strong 2021 campaign with the Reds. Besides providing excellent defense as always, the 30-year-old also batted .247 while hitting seven homers and adding 48 RBIs.

The two-time Golden Glove Award-winner is in the final year of his contract, meaning the Tigers will have to pick up the $7.5 million team option on his deal to ensure he plays for the organization next season. According to Detroit Free Press, the two sides are also interested in negotiating a long-term extension at some point.

Tucker Barnhart made his MLB debut with the Reds in 2014 and has been the team’s primary catcher for the better part of his eight seasons with the franchise. He has a career .248 batting average with 51 home runs and 261 RBIs.

“While it’s bittersweet to be leaving the organization that drafted me, I couldn’t be happier to join the Tigers,” Barnhart said in a statement. “This is an exciting time for a team that’s undergone such a big transformation over the last few years.”

The MLB’s prestigious 500 homer run club recently got a new member. Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera reached the elusive mark on Sunday night, hitting a 400-footer against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cabrera’s 500th homer came in the sixth-inning off Steven Matz’s pitch. It tied the score to 1-1 and paved the way for the Tigers to get the 5-3 win.

After the well-deserved win, Cabrera’s teammates joined in to celebrate his achievement. And he responded by thanking them for their continued support and for being there every step of the way.

“He just thanked us for all the support,” revealed Detroit’s manager A.J. Hinch. “He wanted this for us as much as we wanted it for him.”

Cabrera is only the 28th player in MLB history to reach the 500 homers mark and the first to do so as a member of the Detroit Tigers. The 38-year-old baseball player is currently the only active player in the club besides Los Angeles Dodgers’ Albert Pujols.

After reaching the 500 home runs, Cabrera now has a new challenge. He is aiming to reach 3,000 hits in MLB, something that has been done by just 32 players before. If he succeeds in doing so, he will also become just the sixth player in both clubs.

Miguel Cabrera joined the Tigers in 2008 after spending the first five years of his career with the Marlins. In Tigers’ uniform, he received seven All-Star nods while winning AL MVP honors twice. He was also AL Batting Champion four times, including a three-year sweep from 2011 to 2013.

Free agent pitcher Jose Urena will play the 2021 MLB season with the Detroit Tigers. Urena agreed to a one-year deal with the Tigers that will see him earn $3.5 million next year.

The Tigers confirmed the deal on Thursday via their official social media.

According to Tigers general manager Al Avila, the team made Urena one of their primary targets in free agency due to his leadership and experience playing at a high level.

“Jose has a great ability to navigate a lineup and limit damage, while keeping his team in the game, which is exactly the stability we’re looking for heading into the 2021 season,” Avila added.

Urena is coming off a rough 2020 campaign, in which he had COVID-19 to start the season and then had to be shut down after just five games due to a broken forearm. He went 0-3, posting 5.40 ERA and striking out 15.

In previous years, however, Jose Urena was a major contributor in the Miami Marlins’ rotation. He made his MLB debut with the franchise in 2015 and went on to make 142 appearances in the majors with 98 starts and 18 finishes.

Urena’s career stats include a 32-46 record, 4.60 ERA, and 406 strikeouts.

The Detroit Tigers, on the edge of the current AL playoff picture with a 17-17 record and trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 1.5 games, received a big blow on Wednesday after learning that starting outfielder JaCoby Jones will miss the rest of the season with a fractured left hand.

Jones was hit on the hand by a pitch in the eighth inning of the Tigers’ 12-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers and exited the game immediately. The team’s worst fears were confirmed on Wednesday after x-rays revealed that he had indeed suffered a fracture.

The 28-year-old outfielder has been one of the best and most consistent hitters in the Tigers’ lineup this season, which has exceeded expectations. The center fielder has hit .268 with a .333 on-base percentage, 5 home runs, and 14 RBI this season.

The team placed Jones on the 10-day injured list with his injury, but unless the Tigers were to make a deep playoff run, it will be impossible to return to the team before the season ends.

The Tigers recalled outfielder Derek Hill from their alternate training site to replace Jones on their roster, and he is expected to get many of the starts in center field that Jones would have made.
