The Detroit Pistons made a significant move on Wednesday that might not help them turn around their disappointing 2023-24 season but could help them be a better team in the long run. According to multiple reports, the Pistons acquired forward Simone Fontecchio in a trade with the Utah Jazz.

Playing in his second season in the NBA, Fontecchio established himself as a valuable role player. He is averaging 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting a respectable 39.1% from behind the arc.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that in order to get Fontecchio, the Pistons parted with a second-round pick via Washington Wizards in 2024, forward Kevin Knox, and draft rights to Gabriele Procida.

Fontecchio reportedly had plenty of suitors as the NBA trade deadline approached, but the Pistons ended up putting the best offer forward. The Jazz gets an early second-rounder, considering the Wizards are almost certain to finish the season as one of the worst teams in the NBA while also getting some financial flexibility thanks to Knox’s expiring contract.

The Pistons, on the other hand, see Fontecchio as a mainstay piece in their rotations for years to come. The 28-year-old player will be a restricted free agent in the summer, meaning that the Pistons will have the possibility to retain him even if he ends up deciding to sign a contract with another team.

The slumping Detroit Pistons made a trade over the weekend, but not the one their fans hoped for. Instead of swinging for a star that could change their fortunes in a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, the Pistons opted to do a salary cap-inspired deal with the Washington Wizards.

The trade will see the Pistons sending Marvin Bagley III and Isaiah Livers to the Wizards while acquiring veterans Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala. As part of the deal, Washington will also get two second-round picks.

The motivation for the Pistons here is to shed some salary. Both Gallinari and Muscala are not expected to contribute much but are both on expiring contracts. Bagley, on the other hand, has a guaranteed $12.5 million salary for the next season.

Wizards, on the other hand, get a pair of second-rounders that they could package in other deals. Also, they will get a young role player in Bagley. The second overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft hasn’t lived up to his potential but has been solid in a lesser role. He averaged 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 26 games this season.

This was a trade between two bottom teams in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons are at No. 15 with a 4-36 record, while the Wizards are one spot ahead at 7-32.

The Detroit Pistons brought their historic 28-game losing streak to an end on Saturday night as they defeated the Toronto Raptors 129-127 at the Little Caesars Arena. The Pistons’ last win in the NBA came on October 28, with the team remaining rooted to the bottom of the Eastern Conference as a result.

Cade Cunningham emerged as the Pistons’ main difference maker, scoring 30 points and bagging 12 assists to push Detroit over the finish line. “I feel amazing,” Cunningham said after the victory. “We just kept battling. It’s been a long stretch, all these losses, but I’m just happy to be part of a group of guys who don’t quit.” Jalen Duren also made a significant impact with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Kevin Knox II added 17 points.

Detroit’s victory appeared to be in jeopardy in the second half as the Raptors began to claw their way back into the game. While Toronto scored just 44 points in the first, they added 83 points in the second, missing several free throws which proved to make all the difference in a hotly-contested duel.

The Detroit Pistons made NBA history on Tuesday night for the wrong reasons when they slumped to a 118-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. This was the Pistons’ 27th consecutive loss this season; the longest losing streak in NBA history. Detroit has failed to win since their opening home game on October 28 against the Chicago Bulls, at which point they were 2-1. Now, the Pistons are sitting at the foot of the Eastern Conference standings with a 2-28 record.

Following the team’s 27th straight loss, Pistons star Cade Cunningham addressed his teammates, telling them to remain committed and not to “jump off the boat” in an impassioned speech to motivate his team. The number one overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Cunningham scored 41 points on the night. He has now lost all 10 of the games when he scored 30 points or more; the longest streak of its kind in NBA history.

“I don’t think what I said was positivity, I think it’s just being real … there’s nothing positive about this situation right now that we put ourselves in, so that’s why we have to dig deep and get ourselves out of it,” Cunningham said of his speech. “You can’t get away from it. It weighs on us every day, I mean everywhere. It weighs on us.”

Despite another crushing defeat, Jaden Ivey emerged as the Pistons’ standout player, leading his team with 23 points as well as seven assists. The Detroit Pistons just can’t find a way to win a basketball game. After being blown out 124-92 loss by the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night, the Pistons have set a new franchise record with 22 consecutive losses.

Detroit’s losing streak is now the sixth longest in a single season in NBA history. Three teams have lost 23 games in a row—Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96), Denver Nuggets (1997-98) and Charlotte Bobcats (2011-12)—while Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010-11 and the 76ers in 2013-14 lost 26 straight games.

“It’s deflating. It is what it is. It’s a lot of repetitive games,” said Pistons head coach Monty Williams after the game.

The Pistons lured Williams to Detroit in the offseason, giving him a six-year, $78.5 million contract, which is considered the richest in NBA history for a head coach. The expectation was that the former Phoenix Suns coach could speed up the franchise’s rebuild and get the most out of their young roster.

However, things haven’t worked out well for Williams so far. The Pistons are not only losing games, but they are also hardly competitive. Their 108.1 points per game is third-worst in the league, while they are allowing 119.4 points per game in 2023-24.

Reportedly, the Pistons are expected to be active on the trade market in the coming weeks, hoping to pull the glaring holes on their roster. One player they are targeting is 76ers’ veteran forward Tobias Harris.

The Detroit Pistons are finally giving an extension to one of their draft picks. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pistons have signed forward Isaiah Stewart to a four-year rookie extension.

The extension was confirmed to Wojnarowski by Stewart’s representatives, who said that the deal is worth $64 million.

Prior to Stewart, the Pistons haven’t signed one of their players to a rookie extension since 2008. This doesn’t include center Andrew Drummond, who signed a new deal with the franchise after he became a restricted free agent.

Stewart was drafted 16th overall by Detroit in 2020 and has become a valuable contributor for a young Pistons team. He had his best season as a pro in 2022-23, averaging a career-high 11.7 points to go with 8.1 rebounds.

The Pistons are now hoping that Stewart can continue developing as the franchise makes the transition from a rebuild toward contention. The team hired Monty Williams as their new head coach this season and has an intriguing mix of talented players and dependable veterans that could help them do so.

Stewart is the fifth player from the 2020 draft class to get a rookie extension and the first to receive less than max. Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, Indiana Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton, and Memphis Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane all got maximum rookie extensions from their respective teams.

Monty Williams has agreed to a six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Detroit Pistons as their new head coach, sources revealed on Thursday. This would constitute the largest deal for a coaching role in NBA history.

Named NBA Coach of the Year in May 2022, Williams was dismissed by the Phoenix Suns earlier this month after the team was defeated Western Conference semifinals by the Denver Nuggets. Over his four years with the Suns, Williams led the team to a 194-115 (.628) record in the regular season and 27-19 in the playoffs. His career highlight came in the 2021-22 season, winning a franchise record 64 games and leading the team to the NBA Finals.

Williams replaces Dwane Casey, who stepped down as coach in April in favor of a move to a front-office role. During his five years as Pistons coach, Detroit went 121-263 (.315), making the playoffs just once in the 2018-19 season. The Pistons have failed to go over .500 over the past seven seasons, with their last winning season coming in 2015-16.

The Detroit Pistons will enter the next stage of their rebuild with a new head coach. Dwayne Casey, who coached the Pistons for the past five seasons, is stepping down and will move to the front office role.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Pistons are expected to have Milwaukee Bucks’ assistant Charles Lee and ex-Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka as their candidates for Casey’s replacement.

Casey confirmed that 2022-23 will be his last season as the Pistons’ head coach after Sunday’s regular-season finale against Chicago Bulls. He said that Pistons+ owner Tom Gores offered him a front office role, and he decided to take it so he could focus on spending more time with his family.

“Tom is giving me an opportunity to move into the front office,” Casey said. “I’m excited to go to the next phase of my life. Time to spend more time with my family. This team is on the right track. They probably need to hear a new voice. This is my decision.”

Dwane Casey was named the Pistons’ head coach ahead of the 2018-19 NBA season. He led the team to a 121-263 record in his five seasons at the helm, managing to make the playoffs once. Casey’s time in Detroit was marked by a complete rebuild after the 2018-19 campaign, which led to the team having one of the youngest rosters in the league in the past couple of seasons.

Casey walks away after the Pistons went 17-65 in 2022-23, posting the NBA’s worst record and having the second-worst season in franchise history.

James Wiseman’s career definitely didn’t go as many predicted when the Golden State Warriors took him with the second overall pick in 2020. Instead of becoming the Warriors’ next star, he played only 60 games for the franchise and ended up being sent to the rebuilding Detroit Pistons after just two and a half seasons.

Wiseman himself knows that he failed to meet expectations with the Warriors but believes he can resurrect his career and live up to his potential with the Pistons. At the same time, he realizes that this won’t come overnight.

“I just got to take it one day at a time. I can’t be so hard on myself about anything, about trying to be good right now, all the instant gratification stuff,” he shared in a chat with ESPN. “Sometimes it comes into my mind, but I got to just look at it for what it is and be real with myself. It’s going to take time. It’s not going to be now. It’s going to be within time, it just takes time within the craft. I just got to keep working. That’s it.”

Wiseman struggled with injuries early in his career, missing the entire 2021-22 season due to a torn meniscus. When he was healthy, he seemed overwhelmed by the Warriors’ complex system and was often inconsistent on the floor.

With the Pistons, Wiseman looks in much better shape. He is playing a career-high 25.7 minutes per game and averaging 13.1 points and 8.5 boards per game.
