Wide receiver DeSean Jackson announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday. The three-time Pro Bowler will retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent eight out of his 15 years in the league.

Jackson’s official retirement ceremony will take place on Friday, and he’ll serve as an honorary captain for the team when the Eagles face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

“DeSean Jackson was a dynamic playmaker who captivated Eagles fans with his game-breaking speed, unique skill set, and explosive play,” said Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie in a  team-released statement. “What made DeSean truly stand out during his accomplished 15-year career was his ability to make miraculous plays look routine.”

Jackson entered the league as the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2008. He established himself as one of the most dynamic players in the league early in his career, playing both as a wideout and punt returner. He was the NFL leader in yards per punt return in his sophomore year while also having four punts returned for a touchdown throughout his first three seasons.

Jackson spent six seasons with Philadelphia, earning three Pro Bowl nods, before embarking on stints with Washington and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returned to Philly in 2019 for his second stint with the franchise before leaving again after the 2020 campaign. The 36-year-old last played in 2022, appearing in seven games for the Baltimore Ravens and making nine catches for 153 yards.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr finally got the reliable deep threat he’s been missing so far in the season. Veteran wideout DeSean Jackson, who was recently released by the Los Angeles Rams, confirmed he is joining the Raiders for the remainder of the season.

Jackson broke the news via text message to ESPN’s Josina Anderson. The 34-year-old quarterback followed that up by posting a photoshopped photo of himself in the Raiders jersey on Instagram.

Jackson signed a one-year deal with the Rams in the offseason and had a good start to his stint in Los Angeles. He racked up eight catches for 215 yards and a touchdown in the first five weeks, but his role diminished later on. In the following weeks, he played only 20 snaps on offense and had one catch for six yards, which prompted him to ask for a trade.

Several teams reportedly engaged in talks with the Rams ahead of the trade deadline but the offers were not to the liking of the LA team. After the deadline passed, the organization opted to outright release Jackson.

The move to the Raiders should give DeSean Jackson a more prominent role while also allowing him to play for a contender. The team is currently sitting at a 5-3 record after Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants.

Jackson, who previously also played with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has had three Pro Bowl appearances since coming to NFL in 2008. His stats include 620 catches for 10,877 yards and 57 TDs.

It seems like Philadelphia Eagles’ wideout DeSean Jackson just can’t catch a break. Jackson returned from a spell on the sidelines on Thursday against New York Giants only to get hurt again and face another lengthy break.

Jackson got hurt during a late punt return, being hit illegally by Giants’ Corey Ballentine. He reportedly suffered a high ankle sprain and is getting an MRI to see whether he’ll need surgery. In any case, the 33-year-old is set to be out for at least a couple of weeks.

He previously spent three weeks on Injured Reserve while dealing with a hamstring injury.

Losing Jackson comes at a bad time for the Eagles, considering they have been hampered by injuries for the better part of the season. He joins Philly’s long list of injured pass catchers that includes veteran wideout Alshon Jeffery and tight ends Dallas Goedert and Zach Ertz.

DeSean Jackson returned to Philadelphia last year, being viewed as a valuable veteran addition to the WR position. Things didn’t work out that way so far, as he spent more time on the sidelines than actually playing.

Jackson played a total of seven games with Philly in the last two seasons, totaling only 22 receptions for 314 yards and two touchdowns.

During his first stint with Eagles, between 2008 and 2013, Jackson was one of the most dangerous wideout threats in the league. He earned one All-Pro nod and three Pro Bowl selections during that time while also leading the league in average yards per catch in 2010.
