Point guard Derrick Rose is a member of the New York Knicks once again after the team acquired him in a trade with the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

In order to get Rose, the Knicks parted with guard Dennis Smith Jr. and the Charlotte Hornets’ second-round pick in 2021.

While Rose was linked with a number of teams in recent weeks, the Knicks were the most aggressive in pursuing him. The team’s head coach Tom Thibodeau was the one pushing for the move as he wanted to reunite with the player he previously coached on two occasions.

Rose became the youngest player to win the NBA MVP Award while playing in a Chicago Bulls jersey under Thibodeau, and the pair also worked together on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Derrick Rose previously played with the Knicks during the 2016-17 season, but the injuries and struggles in the triangle offense made it a forgettable campaign for the three-time All-Star. Now, however, he is returning with fewer expectations and in a system that he feels comfortable with.

Rose has been enjoying a small career renaissance in recent years, managing to remain healthy and be a solid contributor. He has played 15 games with the Pistons in 2020-21 so far and is averaging 14.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

The Detroit Pistons performed an MRI on star guard Derrick Rose on Monday after suffering an injury on Sunday in a game against the Sacramento Kings.

While the news wasn’t completely positive, it certainly could have been worse.

The Pistons announced on Tuesday that Rose is dealing with a grade two right ankle sprain, an injury that generally keeps players off of the court only for a few weeks’ time.

Rose has been one of the few bright spots for the Pistons this season, who find themselves mired in a miserable 20-42 season. Despite playoff buzz prior to the beginning of the season, the team has been unable to live up to expectations.

The 2011 NBA MVP has been a positive in the Motor City, undergoing a career rejuvenation that has re-established his position as one of the best point guards in the game of basketball. Rose is averaging 18.8 points and 5.6 assists per game on 46% shooting from the field.

Considering Rose’s previous injury woes and the Pistons’ status outside of the playoff conversation, the team will probably allow him to take his time coming back from the knee sprain.

According to the latest report from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, several teams with championship aspirations are interested in trading for Rose.

The two teams that have emerged as favorites for the former NBA MVP are Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers. Both Lakers and 76ers are in need of a quality point guard to complement their starters and have identified Rose as both an affordable and realistic target. Los Angeles Clippers have also shown interest, but haven’t moved past exploratory talks.

Pistons seemed like they might have a tough time being a competitive team this year, especially since Blake Griffin is probably out for the season. This might push them to be sellers before the trade deadline and get some assets for Rose while his value is still high. There is, however, always the option of Detroit staying put and seeing whether they can clinch a playoff spot in weakened East.

Although he managed to achieve a rare feat of winning both the NBA Rookie of the Year and MVP awards, Derrick Rose has still one big goal to achieve in the NBA. In a recent interview with Sirius XM Radio, the new Detroit Pistons guard said that he wants to win an NBA title before his career ends.

“While I’m in the game…I wanna win a championship that’s what I really wanna do. ” – said Rose.

According to Rose, being an NBA champion is the accolade that he always wanted the most. 

“I got all the accolades that I wanted, now it’s time for me to really get the one that I really, really want.” – he added.

Although he was almost out of the NBA just a few years ago, Rose managed to resurrect his career with Minnesota Timberwolves last season. He played 51 games, and averaged 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game and was even in the conversation for the Sixth Man of the Year award at one moment. This increased his value on the free market, and he ended up landing in Detroit on a two-year, $15 million contract.

As it turns out, Derrick Rose didn’t just choose Pistons for the money. He actually believed that the team has a chance to be competitive in the Eastern Conference. Rose even went so far as saying that Detroit might be up for a big run this next season and become a title contender.

“With Detroit, I feel like we have a great chance with being in the East. We have two great bigs, a great team, you never know.” – Rose said when asked about Pistons’ title chances.

While you have to admire Rose’s optimism, the truth is that Pistons are a perennial playoff team at best. Even with Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond, Detroit simply lacks the star power and depth to challenge the best teams in the NBA. But hey, we won’t be mad if we are proven wrong.
