Baseball Hall of Fame class of inductees for 2020 was announced on Tuesday with Derek Jeter and Larry Walker receiving the honor.

Jeter, who spent his entire career with the New York Yankees, nearly becoming the unanimous pick but was one vote short, being listed on 396 out of 397 ballots. He would be the second unanimous pick in Hall of Fame history after Mariano Rivera became one in 2019.

“Well, I look at all the votes that I got,” said Jeter. “Trying to get that many people to agree on something is pretty difficult to do. So that’s not something that’s on [my] mind.”

Derek Jeter played 20 years in the MLB, during which he made 14 All-Star appearances and won five World Series. Jeter finished his career with .310 batting average, 3,465 hits, 260 home runs, and 1,311 RBIs.

Larry Walker, on the other hand, managed to get into the Hall of Fame in his last attempt while becoming the first Colorado Rockies player to receive the honor. 2020 was Walker’s 10th and final year he would appear on the ballot. Walker, who notably played with Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals, was five-times All-Star and has an AL MVP award from 1997. His career averages include .313 batting average, 383 homers, and 1,311.

Miami Marlins are now in the hands of Derek Jeter. Ok, he isn’t the sole owner, but he is the most prominent member of the ownership group that has taken over the team. The last obstacle was getting the vote of owners, which happened on Wednesday. The vote was held via conference call and it the sale was approved unanimously.

I congratulate Mr. Sherman on receiving approval from the Major League Clubs as the new control person of the Marlins and look forward to Mr. Jeter’s ownership and CEO role following his extraordinary career as a player.“

The previous owner Jeffrey Loria also released a statement revolving the sale, saying that “owning the Miami Marlins has been one of the singular honors” of his life.

Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman will take control over the team in the coming days. They are expected to get immediately to work and re-build Marlins as a winning franchise. There are already rumors about the changes that will take place once Jeter and Sherman are in charge. Sherman will be the new control person while Jeter will run the Marlins’ baseball operations. It is expected that the new ownership will cut payroll next season, in order to get the finances straight. There may be also some cleaning of the front office, as there are rumors circling that Jack McKeon, Jeff Conine, Andre Dawson and Tony Perez could all find themselves on the chopping block.

The new owners paid $1.2 billion for the team that was originally purchased by Loria in 2002 for $158.2 million.
