The New Orleans Saints have reportedly reworked quarterback Derek Carr’s contract with the move, bringing them significant salary cap savings.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Saints converted a significant portion of Carr’s $30 million base salary for the upcoming season into a signing bonus. This will bring them around $23 million in salary cap relief.

Doing large contract restructures isn’t new for the Saints. It became a tradition for the team to be well over the cap ahead of the upcoming NFL season and rely on extensions and contract restructures to comply with salary cap rules. Aside from reworking Carr’s contract, the job became easier for the Saints thanks to the league increasing salary cap in 2024 by $30.6 million to a record $255.4 million per team.

Derek Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints last offseason. The four-time Pro Bowler had an up-and-down campaign in 2024 that saw him complete 68.4 percent of his passes and throw for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight picks.

The Saints finished the campaign with a 9-8 record, missing out on the NFC South title due to a tiebreaker. It marked the third straight year in which the franchise didn’t play in the postseason.

According to the NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Carr informed the Raiders that he wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause to join another team. The franchise is now expected to release the veteran before his contract guarantee kicks in.

The Raiders have previously worked out a trade framework with several interested teams. Carr held talks with some of them and even visited the Saints but ended up deciding he wasn’t interested in helping the Las Vegas team extract some value for him.

If Carr remains on the Raiders’ roster past February 15th, more than $40 million of his contract in the upcoming two seasons will become guaranteed. With the head coach Josh McDaniels and the front office deciding they want to have a new signal caller and Carr not accepting the trade, the only viable choice for the franchise is to let him walk away for nothing.

Derek Carr spent the past nine years as the Raiders’ starting QB. He led the franchise to two playoff appearances and earned four Pro Bowl nods. The 31-year-old player finished the 2022 season throwing for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

If he becomes a free agent, Carr is expected to have significant interest from QB-needy teams. The list will likely include the Saints, the New York Jets, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among other teams.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Carr reiterated his intention to remain a Raider his whole career and said that he would rather walk away from football than play for a different team.

“I’d probably quit football if I had to play for somebody else,” said Carr. “I am a Raider for my entire life. I’m going to root for one team for the rest of my life—it’s the Raiders.”

The 2021 NFL offseason was marked with several high-profile QBs, including the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson and Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers being unhappy with their current teams and demanding a trade.
