Most people spent Christmas Day celebrating and spreading the holiday spirit. But for the Denver Broncos, it was business as usual.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Broncos used Christmas as an opportunity to make some roster moves and waived veteran safety and team captain Kareem Jackson.

While the timing of the Broncos’ move is questionable, their decision isn’t surprising. Jackson served multiple suspensions this season for illegal hits, including a four-game suspension that expired in Week 16.

Reportedly, the Broncos hope that Jackson will end up clearing waivers so they can sign him to their practice squad. The 35-year-old was on a one-year, $2.51 million contract.

Jackson played eight games with the Broncos in 2023. He has two interceptions, three pass deflections, and 51 tackles.

The issue for Jackson this season has been his inability to perform “clean” hits on opponents’ players while tackling. He was first handed a two-game suspension after being ejected for a hit on Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave in Week 7.

After serving the suspension, Jackson returned for a Week 11 game against the Minnesota Vikings. He played the whole game but was subsequently suspended four games by the league after Vikings’ quarterback Josh Dobbs needed a concussion check following a hit by Jackson.

Despite their struggles early in the 2023 NFL campaign, the Denver Broncos are showing they can keep up with the best teams in football. After beating the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9, the Broncos now got a huge 24-22 win over the favored Buffalo Bills as well.

The Broncos didn’t play at their best but benefited from mistake-riddled Bills, who had four turnovers and essentially handed them the win in the final seconds of the game.

Trailing 21-22, the Broncos received the ball at their own 25 yards with 1:55 left on the clock. Quarterback Russell Wilson and the offense made their way to Buffalo’s 23 yards to set up a potential game-winning field goal for their kicker Wil Lutz.

Lutz sent his 41-yarder wide right, and it seemed like it was over for the Broncos. However, it turned out that the Bills had too many men on the field for the play, and Lutz had a do-over. He made no mistake on his second attempt, drilling the ball between the uprights. 

The win now has the Broncos at 4-5 and dreaming about a potential playoff run. It is something that seemed impossible after the first six weeks when Denver was 1-5.

“We believe in each other. We believe in what we can do,” said quarterback Russell Wilson after the game. “To beat the Chiefs, to beat these guys, it sets a standard of who we should be, who we can be, and who we are going to be.”

The Bulls, on the other hand, have some soul-searching to do. Despite being considered one of the Super Bowl favorites ahead of the season, they are currently 5-5 and face a tough challenge to turn their fortunes.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was carted off of his team’s practice session on Thursday after incurring a right hamstring injury. “It’s a hamstring,” Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed following the incident, adding, “We’ll get an MRI and see where he’s at with it.” The wide receiver is expected to be sidelined for several weeks as a result.

Jeudy has become the fifth wide receiver for the Broncos who may be sidelined over the medium- to long-term. Tim Patrick is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, KJ Hamler is dealing with a heart ailment, Jalen Virgil suffered a knee injury, and Brendan Johnson recently returned to practice on Thursday after missing several weeks with a leg injury.

Last season, Jeudy missed three games as a result of an ankle injury. He also dealt with a hamstring setback during the off-season workouts leading to the 2022 season. He also briefly missed out on the past off-season with a thigh injury.

ESPN analyst Rex Ryan was interviewed on Saturday by the Denver Broncos for the role of defensive coordinator, sources confirmed to ESPN on Monday. The former NFL head coach previously stated that he would only leave his analyst role “for the perfect situation”.

Before turning to a career in broadcasting in 2017, the 60-year-old Ryan served as a head coach in the NFL for 30 years. This included eight years as the head coach of the New York Jets (2009-2014) and the Buffalo Bills (2015-2016). His highlights included leading the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Ryan served in various roles at the Baltimore Ravens for 10 years. This included spending four years as the team’s defensive coordinator, during which time the Ravens’ defense was ranked in the top 10 every season. In five of Ryan’s six seasons in New York, the Jets’ defense ranked in the top 10 as well.

Competing with Ryan for the defensive coordinator role is former Broncos head coach and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, among several other candidates. Joseph is also expected to interview for the defensive coordinator role offered by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Denver Broncos have their new head coach. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Broncos are expected to give the job to Sean Payton after agreeing on the compensation with the New Orleans Saints.

Payton stepped down as the Saints’ head coach after the 2021 NFL season and moved to broadcasting. However, he remained under contract with the franchise, and any team that wanted to hire him had to strike a deal with the Saints.

The Broncos will reportedly send the No. 30 pick in 2023 and the second-round pick in 2024 to New Orleans. In exchange, they are getting Payton and a third-rounder in next year’s draft. 

Sean Payton was the most prominent name available on the head-coaching market, and every team with an opening at least made a call to gauge his level of interest. Payton ended up interviewing all of them except the Indianapolis Colts. Still, Denver ended up making the best pitch to convince him to return to coaching after a one-year sabbatical.

Prior to zeroing in on Payton, the Broncos also interviewed the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh. Ryans ended up landing the Houston Texans’ head coaching job, while Harbaugh decided to return to Michigan.

Payton spent 15 seasons as a head coach of the New Orleans Saints. He compiled a 152-89 record during the regular season and made the playoffs nine times. During Payton’s time in charge, the Saints won seven NFC South titles and were crowned the Super Bowl champions in 2009.

Even the team’s general manager John Elway stated that Broncos need to get better at the position.

“We expect to have an answer there, however that goes,” – Elway said about his QB plans. “I think that thought process makes me think we’re going to have a better year. Because the fact is we’ve got to figure out how to get that position playing better. … There is no doubt we’ve got to get better at that position. For us to have a chance to get better, we’ve got to get better at that position.“

Washington Redskins were trying to work a long-term deal with Kirk Cousins in 2016 and 2017, but had to use the franchise tag to keep him on one-year deals in both of those years. Now the Redskins don’t have a choice and will either have to give Cousins a big long-term offer or let him walk away. The Broncos are there, waiting.

Cousins was drafted by the Redskins in 2012 NFL Draft with the 105 overall pick. In his first three years with the team, Cousins was getting small opportunities, but it wasn’t until 2015 when he showed his full potential. Since then, he had three consecutive seasons where he passed for over 4,000 yards.
