Concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may mean Dallas Cowboys’ star end DeMarcus Lawrence will miss the training camp this season.

In a recent chat with ESPN, the 28-year-old Pro Bowler told the media outlet that he’s taking his time before making the final decision on his participation in the team activities later this month.

“I’m taking it one day at a time, talking with my team and trying to figure out as many details as possible before I make a decision and have it set in stone,” said Lawrence.

The biggest reason why Lawrence is on the fence about the training camp is that his wife Sasha is pregnant, and he doesn’t want to jeopardize his family in any way.

“When I have to take that away from myself, it’s hard, and I don’t want to make a decision like that,” said Lawrence. “But I also have to make sure I’m taking care of my family. Family is No. 1. After the game of football is done, that’s the only thing I have to depend on, so I’ve got to take care of them.”

NFL teams are currently scheduled to enter the training camp by the end of July. Reportedly, players will have the option to skip the camp in case of health concerns, but the league and NFL Players’ Associations still haven’t agreed on terms of the opt-out.

DeMarcus Lawrence is scheduled to enter the second year of his five-year, $105 million contract. Lawrence finished 2019 with modest 45 tackles and 5.0 sacks, marking the first time in three years that he wasn’t selected to Pro Bowl.

Many people believe that Dallas Cowboys’ defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence didn’t exactly justify the five-year, $105 million extension he received prior to the 2019 NFL season. And while Lawrence doesn’t think this was the case, he is determined to perform better in 2020.

Lawrence finished 2019 with 45 tackles and 5.0 sacks, his lowest tally since 2016. In a recent interview with FOX Sports One, the 28-year-old said that he believes these numbers don’t reflect his contributions on the field.

“Nothing happened to me last year,” said Lawrence. “I know I ended the season with five sacks, but I also helped other players boost their numbers back up to double digits. It’s not a one-man game, and I know how to play the game the right way. I know how to make plays when plays come my way. And I also know how to make sure my teammates are making their plays.”

However, Lawrence still intends to up his statistics this season.

“You don’t have to worry about nothing. Trust me, the sack number will be back up,” he added.

After a Pro Bowl season in 2017, in which he had 14.5 sacks, DeMarcus Lawrence was set to hit the free market after not being able to agree on a contract extension with Cowboys. The club ended up placing a franchise tag on him, keeping him with the organization for one additional season.

Playing under the tag, Lawrence put up another Pro Bowl season with 10.5 sacks, and convinced Cowboys he deserves the money. He ended up becoming the NFL’s highest-paid defensive end with $21 million annual salary and $65 million guaranteed.

Dallas Cowboys’ pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence won’t be playing under the franchise tag in 2019 after all. According to NFL Network, Cowboys and Lawrence managed to get on the same page and agreed to five-years, $105 million extension.

Lawrence’s new deal has $65 million in guaranteed money, which is the fourth highest guaranteed amount in the history of the league for a defensive player. The 27-year-old will also be only the third defensive player to earn more than $20 million on an annual basis.

DeMarcus Lawrence and Cowboys failed to agree on a long term extension in 2018, and he ended up playing the season on a $17.1 franchise tag. Dallas placed a second franchise tag on him this year, worth $20.5 million, which would come into effect on July 15 hadn’t the two sides agreed to a deal.

After getting the long-term deal he wanted, Lawrence will now undergo a shoulder surgery to fix the torn labrum he struggled with last year. He is expected to miss the training camp but should return before the start of the season.

DeMarcus Lawrence was selected 34th overall by Dallas Cowboys in 2014 NFL Draft. After three years in the league, in which he had his ups and downs, Lawrence had his breakthrough year in 2017 when he had 14.5 sacks and four forced fumbles and earned a Pro Bowl appearance.

In 2018 Lawrence followed that up with another Pro Bowl-worthy season in which he contributed with 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception.
