Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was a big part of San Francisco 49ers’ defense that dominated the 2019 season and propelled the franchise to a Super Bowl appearance. Still, the 49ers went on and traded Buckner to Indianapolis Colts during the offseason in an unexpected move that caught the league by surprise.

As it turns out, Buckner himself wasn’t expecting such an outcome despite the fact that he and the organization couldn’t agree on a contract extension at the time.

Speaking about the trade in a recent chat with The Athletic’s Zak Keefer, Buckner said that he believed the 49ers will make more effort to keep him.

“I was hoping the 49ers would at least meet me in the middle,” Buckner told Keefer. “I definitely didn’t expect them to trade me… You just don’t expect to be traded.”

Still, it is safe to say the move worked out for Buckner, considering Colts made him the second-highest-paid DT in the league with a four-year, $84 million contract extension. Also, the 26-year-old has been enjoying a productive campaign in 2020, managing 2.5 sacks, 34 tackles, 13 QB hits, and one safety.

The 49ers, on the other hand, flipped the pick they received for DeForest Buckner from Colts and ended up selecting South Carolina’s DT Javon Kinlaw as his replacement. The move hasn’t been a big success so far, as Kinlaw has no sacks and has produced only one QB hit in his rookie campaign.
