Veteran Dee Strange-Gordon, who has two All-Star appearances and an NL batting title from 2015, couldn’t secure his place on the Cincinnati Reds’ roster for the 2021 MLB season.

Strange-Gordon was released by the Reds on Friday, with the organization confirming the move on social media. The 32-year-old star was one of the non-roster invitees for Spring Training, with the team looking to evaluate him for shortstop help.

Strange-Gordon played in 12 exhibition games for Cincinnati, posting a .281 batting average and having four RBIs. However, the Reds reportedly felt he would be an unnecessary luxury as several other candidates for the shortstop position had a good showing.  The organization recently also moved All-Star infielder Eugenio Suarez to SS, getting even more options.

Despite things not working for Strange-Gordon with the Reds, he should get a look from other teams based on his solid showing in Spring Training. It should also help that he can play second baseman, shortstop, and center fielder.

Dee Strange-Gordon, who made his MLB debut in 2011, previously played with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, and Seattle Mariners. Besides his previously mentioned two All-Star nods and NL batting title, he also has a Silver Slugger and Golden Glove Award while leading the MLB in stolen bases on three occasions.

Strange-Gordon’s career stats in the majors include a .286 batting average, 18 home runs, 234 RBIs, and 333 stolen bases.
