The Arizona Cardinals made a decision on Friday to move on from All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins. The move comes after the franchise tried and failed to trade the veteran wide receiver this offseason.

The Cardinals made the move official with an announcement posted on their social media.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Cardinals will take on a $22.6 million dead-money cap hit in 2023 as a result of releasing Hopkins. They will also clear around $7.4 million in salary cap space and avoid paying the player’s $19.45 million salary for this upcoming season, as he didn’t have any guaranteed money left on his deal.

Reportedly, the Cardinals tried to move DeAndre Hopkins for the better part of the offseason but found out that there was no market for him considering his huge deal. The teams were willing to engage in negotiations only if Hopkins would rework his contract and take a smaller salary, something that the player was unwilling to do.

Hopkins leaves the Cardinals after three underwhelming seasons in which he dealt with consistency, injuries, and suspensions. He played 35 games with the franchise during that period, catching 221 passes for 2,696 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Despite not being on a Pro Bowl level for the past couple of years, Hopkins is still considered one of the better wideouts in the league and is expected to attract lots of interest around the league. The teams rumored to be interested in signing him are the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the New England Patriots.

It’s no secret that the Arizona Cardinals would be willing to part ways with Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins if the right offer comes their way. And now we know what that offer should look like.

Longtime Cardinals beat writer Mike Jurecki reported earlier this week that his sources told him the Cardinals are looking to get at least a second-round selection and a conditional pick for Hopkins.

Considering the increase in the value of quality wide receivers in recent years, some might be surprised by the Cardinals not asking for a first-round selection. However, Hopkins’ age, big contract, and the fact that he served a six-game suspension in 2023 for violating NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy are probably making teams cautious about giving significant assets to sign him.

DeAndre Hopkins spent the first seven seasons of his pro career with the Houston Texans, establishing himself as one of the premium wideouts in the league. After unsuccessful contract extension talks, the Texans decided to send him to Arizona in 2020 in exchange for a second-round selection, a fourth-round pick swap, and running back David Johnson.

Hopkins inked a two-year, $54.5 million contract extension with the Cardinals upon his arrival, becoming the highest-paid wideout in the league. It seemed like money well-spent for the franchise at first, as Hopkins delivered 115 catches for 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in his first year. However, the Clemson product would go on to play only 19 games in the following two years due to injuries and suspension, totaling 102 catches and 1,289 yards receiving.

The Arizona Cardinals will have to wrap up the 2021 regular season without their star-wideout DeAndre Hopkins. According to multiple reports, Hopkins is dealing with a knee sprain and is expected to be sidelined for more than four weeks.

Hopkins got injured during Arizona’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday. He is currently getting a second opinion in order to see whether he needs surgery. The Cardinals reportedly remain optimistic and believe they could have the Pro Bowl wide receiver back “at some point in the postseason.”

Hopkins, who already missed three games this season, hasn’t been productive in 2021 as he was last year when he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors. In 10 games, the 29-year-old managed 42 catches for 572 yards while catching eight touchdowns.

DeAndre Hopkins’ absence down the stretch serves as a tough blow for the Cardinals even though they’ve pretty much secured a playoff spot. At 10-3, Arizona is facing a tough battle to secure the NFC West title, having just one game in hand over the Rams (9-3). They would probably also want to take back the top seed in NFC and a first-round bye, which they recently relinquished to the Green Bay Packers.

The Cardinals will most likely turn to rookie Rondale Moore to fill the void left by Hopkins’ injury. They also have third-year wideout Antoine Wesley and their 2019’s second-round pick Andy Isabella as options on the position.

Arizona Cardinals have the best wide receiver in the league. At least, that’s what their newest acquisition DeAndre Hopkins claims.

Hopkins recently made an appearance on ESPN’s Jalen & Jacoby and decided to let the world know that he is the “best” player at the wideout position in football.

“I definitely think I’m the best,” said Hopkins. “I know I’m the best. Mike’s my boy. I love [Saints wide receiver] Michael [Thomas] … but he knows if I had Drew Brees my whole career what these numbers would be. [Falcons wide receiver] Julio Jones knows if I had Matt Ryan my whole career. That’s my boy. I trained with Julio, too. He knows what these numbers would be.”

Hopkins, who joined the Cardinals in a trade from Houston Texans in March, definitely has credentials to back up his statement. The 27-year-old WR earned four Pro Bowl appearances and three First-team All-Pro since entering the league in 2013 while failing to reach 1,100 yards just twice in his career.

Also, DeAndre Hopkins makes a good point that some other star wideouts in the league had better quarterbacks. Between 2013 and 2017, Hopkins played with 10 different quarterbacks, none of which were Pro Bowl-caliber signal-callers. Only when Texans installed Deshaun Watson as their starter did he have a genuine star QB to catch passes from.

Still, Hopkins doesn’t want people to think that he’s using that as an excuse. “Those guys are definitely blessed to be in a position where, their whole career, they had a Pro Bowl quarterback—quarterback that they spent multiple seasons with,” he added. “But I don’t complain. I don’t make excuses. I go out there and work.”

In one of the most surprising move this offseason, Houston Texans decided to trade Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona Cardinals. However, it appears that Hopkins could have easily stayed in AFC as Baltimore Ravens made a late push for him.

Sports Illustrated’s Michael Silver reported during the 2020 NFL Draft night coverage that Ravens were interested in Hopkins prior to his trade to Arizona, but their bid was unsuccessful.

While there is a chance that Ravens’ offer simply wasn’t as good as the one from Cardinals, there are also speculations that Texans didn’t want to strengthen their AFC rival. Instead, Hopkins went to AFC in exchange for running back David Johnson, 2020 second-round pick, and a 2021 fourth-round pick.

Ravens are keen on surrounding their star quarterback Lamar Jackson with offensive weapons and have been reportedly pursuing a wideout addition for some time now. Still, it appears that the team isn’t ready to spend big in order to do so.

Despite having a chance to draft a WR in a historically deep draft for receivers, Ravens opted to address the concerns on defense and take inside linebacker Patrick Queen in the first round. It remains to be seen whether they focus on offense later in the draft.

The Houston Texans shocked much of the football world on March 20th, trading standout wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for running back David Johnson and two draft picks.

On Friday, in a conference call with Texans season ticket holders, head coach Bill O’Brien tried to explain the rationale behind the deal, which was criticized by a large swath of the team’s fanbase and the football world as a whole.

O’Brien stated that the Texans were happy with Hopkins, but that the 27-year-old wide received “wanted a raise” on his contract that has three remaining years.

The Texas, apparently, were uncomfortable with committing more money to the four-time Pro Bowler and three-time First Team All-Pro selection. According to O’Brien, the team highly valued the package offered by Arizona, which included a second-round pick in the 2020 Draft and a fourth-round pick in next year’s Draft along with Johnson.

Texans fans are still reeling from the loss of Hopkins, who is considered to be one of the top wideouts in the league. Many believe that the package that Arizona received in exchange for him was simply insufficient.

At any rate, Houston seems to have a rationale for their approval of the deal, whether or not their fans like it.
