The Cleveland Browns could enter the game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday without their starting tight end David Njoku. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Njoku is dealing with burn injuries that were caused by a fire accident that happened in his house.

Reportedly, Njoku was lighting a backyard fire pit when he suffered burns on his arms and face. He was treated by the Browns’ medical staff and didn’t require a hospital visit.

Njoku is currently listed as questionable, with his status for the Ravens game probably being up until the kickoff. However, the 27-year-old player indicated on social media that he intends to play.

Being without Njoku would be a serious hit to the Browns offense, which is already trying to navigate the aftermath of star running back Nick Chubb’s season-ending injury. Njoku has 10 catches for 92 yards in the first three games of the season. He had 58 catches for 628 yards and four touchdowns in 2022.

The Browns also have starting quarterback Deshaun Watson listed as questionable for Sunday. Watson injured his shoulder in a Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans and has been limited in practice. However, the expectation is that the 28-year-old player will be ready to play.

Last season, David Njoku was close to leaving the Cleveland Browns after requesting a trade. Now, Njoku is locked in as the Browns’ tight end of the future and is set to become one of the best-paid players in his position.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Njoku and the Browns have agreed to a four-year extension that is worth $56.75 million. The 25-year-old player receives $28 million guaranteed and an annual salary of $14.2, which will make him among the top-five highest-paid TEs in the NFL. This comes after Cleveland placed a franchise tag on a University of Miami product earlier in the offseason.

Njoku himself confirmed the news in an appreciation post on Instagram.

“Truly Blessed through it all,” Njoku wrote. “Thank you to the Browns organization and The Haslam Family. Thankful for all my teammates past and present.”

The Browns selected David Njoku with the first-round pick in 2017 and expected him to be a long-term solution to the position for years to come. However, there were some doubts about that early on as Cedar Grove native proved wildly inconsistent. This, alongside the constant coaching changes in Cleveland, pushed him to the exit door in 2021.

Still, after the Browns elected not to trade him, Njoku went to work and had one of his best seasons as a pro. He caught 36 receptions for 475 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games in 2021. This made Cleveland even more confident about his upside and resulted in a deal that should make both sides quite happy.

It appears that the Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku is off the market. Reportedly, Njoku decided to withdraw his trade request and is now “all in Cleveland.”

Last month, Njoku decided to ask for a trade from the Browns, believing that a change of scenery would benefit his career. However, the organization showed little interest in making this happen as they wanted to give the talented yet inconsistent 24-year-old tight end another chance.

This approach worked, as Njoku accepted his stay in Cleveland judging by his recent social media post.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Njoku changed his mind after a meeting with Brown’s general manager Andrew Berry. Rapoport added that there is “no trade request anymore.”

David Njoku was the Browns’ first-round pick in 2017 but hardly played like it so far in his career. In the past three years, Njoku only had 93 receptions for 1,066 and nine touchdowns. There is a possibility that he makes a leap under new head coach Kevin Stefanski, but he’ll first have to beat some tough competition.

The Browns invested heavily in the tight end position this offseason, giving Pro Bowler Austin Hooper a record-breaking contract in free agency while snapping Florida Atlantic’s Harrison Bryant in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku is looking for a way out. According to Njoku’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, the 23-year-old tight end officially informed the team that he wants to be traded.

Rosenhaus told ESPN that Njoku would like to find a new team before the NFL kicks off with the training camp.

“It is in David’s best interest to find a new team at this time,” said Rosenhaus.

Browns recently picked up the fifth-year option on Njoku’s contract and would reportedly want to keep him with the franchise. However, the player believes he can’t reach his full potential in Cleveland and has been wanting to move on for some time.

Although the Browns value Njoku, they can afford to lose him if the relationship is unsalvageable. The team signed Pro Bowler Austin Hooper to a record deal in the offseason, while they also rookie Harrison Bryant on the depth chart.

Cleveland, however, won’t be able to get much for the player they drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. According to front office insiders, the most other teams would be willing to pay for Njoku is a fourth-round pick, while some even think that fifth-rounder would be enough.

Despite being regarded as a TE with a high ceiling, Njoku struggled to make a mark with Cleveland Browns due to injuries and frequent coaching changes. In 36 games (21 starts) with Browns, he managed to get 93 receptions for 1,066 yards and nine touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns stocked up on the tight end position this year, giving Austin Hooper a record-breaking contract and drafting rookie Harrison Bryant out of Florida Atlantic. These moves will most likely cut into former first-round pick David Njoku’s snaps, but the 23-year-old doesn’t seem to be worried about that too much.

Njoku recently had a chat with Browns’ official website in which he said that he believes “sky is the limit” for him this season if he manages to stay healthy.

“My No. 1 goal is to stay healthy,” said Njoku. “If I can stay healthy, the sky is the limit. It’s going to be special. We have all the tools here, and we have a great coach, so we’re really excited to put it all together.”

Njoku had a disappointing season in 2019, being limited to only two starts due to a wrist injury. Despite this, and the fact that they made several additions at the TE position, Browns still decided to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract.

Cleveland’s new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt recently told reporters that he intends to use sets that feature multiple tight ends, which would keep David Njoku and Austin Hooper on the field at the same time. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to prolong Njoku’s career with the franchise.

Njoku played 36 games since entering the league in 2017 and has 93 career receptions for 1,066 yards and nine touchdowns.

It turns out that Cleveland Browns didn’t manage to leave Monday night’s game against New York Jets unscathed. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Browns’ starting tight end David Njoku broke his wrist in his team’s 23-3 win and is now facing a lengthy break.

Njoku left the Jets’ game during the first half, failing to get a single reception. In Week 1 he had four receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown.

According to Rapoport’s sources, Njoku was told that he will need surgery in order to repair the damage on the wrist. The 23-year-old will seek another opinion, but if the surgery ends up being the only solution, he will be sidelined for more than a month.

David Njoku entered the NFL in 2017 when Cleveland Browns took him with the 29th overall pick in that year’s draft. After an encouraging rookie season, Njoku became Browns’ starter at TE in 2018. He finished the year with 56 receptions for 639 yards and four TDs.

With Njoku out, Browns will turn to third-year TE Pharaoh Brown and their acquisitions in 2019 in Ricky Seals-Jones and Demetrius Harris.
