On Monday, the Green Bay Packers announced that they are releasing All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari. Before being cut, Bakhtiari was the longest-tenured player on the Packers’ roster.

The Packers saying goodbye to one of their franchise legends was likely a financial decision as the move comes with $21 million in cap savings. Green Bay will also incur a dead cap hit of $19 million.

“David is one of the best offensive linemen that has played in the NFL during my time in the league. His consistency and approach to his craft is unmatched,” said head coach Matt LaFleur in a statement. “David’s presence extended beyond his impact on the field, as he was a cornerstone of the Packers in the locker room when I arrived and was a great resource to our young team.

Bakhtiari was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and proved to be an absolute steal for the Packers. Becoming a starter in his rookie year, Bakhtiari went on to receive five All-Pro selections and three Pro Bowl nods by the time the 2020 season wrapped up. During that campaign, he also signed a four-year, $105.5 million contract extension, which made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

However, Bakhtiari’s career has taken a drastic turn since then. He missed all but one game in 2021 due to an ACL injury and was limited to 11 games the season after. In 2023, he continued to experience problems with his knee and ended up playing just one game.

Despite the injury issues, Bakhtiari is expected to garner significant interest in the free agent market. The New York Jets are mentioned as a possible destination where he would reunite with his former Packers teammate, Aaron Rodgers.

The Green Bay Packers star left tackle David Bakhtiari’s continued struggles to remain healthy have put his future with the Packers in doubt, judging by recent comments by the team’s head coach Matt LaFleur.

Bakhtiari tore an ACL in his left knee in late 2020 and has gone through a series of setbacks while attempting to return to action. The 32-year-old has now had four surgeries in less than three years and only managed to play 13 games during that period.

Bakhtiari started at left tackle in Week 1 of the 2023 season but hasn’t played since due to knee issues. He was forced to have another procedure last week and was placed on Injured Reserve with no timeline given for his possible return.

When asked about chances that Bakhtiari plays again this season and the prospects of him continuing as a Packer, LaFleur didn’t give the most reassuring answer.

“Yeah, I’ll let Dave comment on that,” LaFleur said. “I know he wanted to talk to you guys later on. I’ll let him talk about his timeline.”

The Packers have received trade interest in Bakhtiari this offseason, with the New York Jets reportedly testing his availability. At the time, Green Bay rejected the possibility of moving from the three-time Pro Bowler but might be regretting that decision now.

Bakhtiari signed a four-year, $105.5 million contract extension with the Packers in 2020, making him the NFL’s highest-paid offensive lineman. His deal runs through the 2024 season.

Green Bay Packers don’t have to worry about their offensive line for years to come. Because they will have All-Pro offensive tackle David Bakhtiari manning it until at least 2025.

Packers announced on Sunday that Bakhtiari inked a new four-contract extension with the team. This almost certainly ensures that the 29-year-old player will spend his entire career with the franchise that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Reportedly, David Bakhtiari’s new deal is worth $103.5 million and comes with a $30 million signing bonus. He can earn a further $2 million based on various incentives.

With this new deal and $23 million average annual salary, Bakhtiari now becomes the highest-paid OL player in the NFL. He jumped over Houston Texans’ Laremy Tunsil, who signed a three-year, $66 million contract extension with $22 million a year salary back in April.

“That is something special that I’ve been chasing really ever since I got in the league,” said Bakhtiari off the deal. “I have goals, very lofty ones, and I always wanted to say that I was the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, and today I get to say that.”

Bakhtiari took over the left tackle position for the Packers as a rookie in 2013 and never looked back. He earned two Pro Bowl nods since, while having an All-Pro selection in each of the past four years.
