Since Dave Sarachan took over the United States men’s national soccer team in October 2017, his focus was on the younger players. Since he took over, 18 new players have made their debuts for the senior team.

This meant that some of the USMNT veterans like Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore failed to receive call-ups for recent friendly games. However, Sarachan didn’t rule out calling them in the future and said that they still have a role in the team.

The 64-year-old coach told reporters on Wednesday that he recently spoke with Bradley, and explained to the player that there would be a time when the team will count on veteran players once again.

We’re not discounting the value of veteran leadership, and Michael falls into that category,” – said Sarachan. “There will be a time, I’m sure when we’re going to count on those players like Michael to be a part of this. We had a good conversation, and I think he understands where we are.”

While U.S. Soccer Federation looks for a permanent solution for USMNT’s coaching position, Dave Sarachan will continue to fill the interim role at least until the end of the year. USMNT has five friendly matches to play until the end of the year, including home games against Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. According to Sarachan, the fans can expect to see a similar roster that played in the several recent friendlies.

I would say that the roster, if you followed our team over the last six friendlies, will be composed pretty similarly to what we’ve done in the past,” – he said. “But I feel very confident that the group we’re going to bring will be very competitive.

The United States men’s national soccer team might be in for a bright future despite missing to qualify for 2018 World Cup in Russia. The U.S. faced Bolivia in an international friendly on Monday night and came out with an easy 3-0 win. To make things more exciting, it was a win that USMNT managed to clinch with the help of its young players. While the team’s brightest young star, Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic, had to miss the game due to an injury, others stepped in.

After Walker Zimmerman scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute, teenagers Josh Sargent and Timothy Weah added a goal each in the second half for a comfortable win. This was the first goal in USMNT jersey for all three goal scorers. Besides them, five players made their international debuts versus Bolivia, with U.S. roster having 11 players who were 21 or less. USMNT’s caretaker manager Dave Sarachan decided to give younger players a chance to show what they know and they responded in an impressive manner.

I thought for good segments of the game, the soccer was pretty good,” – said Sarachan after the game. “I thought in the first half we had a number of opportunities to bury some chances, but we looked young. We looked young in terms of patience and quality, but that’s what these games are all about.

This was an especially eventful game for the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain youngster Timothy Weah. While he struggled with making correct plays in the first half, Weah bounced back in the second half and put on an impressive display.

[Weah] was all over the shop,” – said Sarachan about his young star. “He looked like a kid who has never played at a higher level, [then] a guy that was looking to come out of a game where he wasn’t even sure if he was hurt, [and later] to flying and beating guys.

Dave Sarachan then decided to reflect on another 18-year-old scorer against Bolivia, Werder Bremen’s Josh Sargent, who made his debut for USMNT.

We’re very thin at the No. 9 position in American soccer in my opinion,” – he said. “So here’s a kid that has progressed throughout all the age groups and [youth] World Cup settings, and I’m not projecting Josh to be a starter from here on in with the men’s team, but he possesses a certain mentality and frame. And why not look at him at a time when you can? We need goal scorers, we need to give them opportunities, and so for me, I didn’t even think twice about it.

However, this young squad will have their true test in the upcoming weeks when it faces Ireland and France in the upcoming friendlies.

The U.S. Soccer Federation has announced on Wednesday that Bruce Arena’s assistant, Dave Sarachan, was named interim coach of the United States men’s national team. Sarachan, who has a contract until the end of the year as the rest of the Bruce Arena’s staff, will lead the team in the match against Portugal in November. Alongside Sarachan, Pat Noonan, Matt Reis, and Kenny Arena are also on the U.S. Soccer Federation’s payroll. It is expected that they will not get new contracts as the federation looks for a new figure to coach USMNT. That process, however, may take a while.

As this is the start of a five-year project to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and grow the national team, we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to find the right coach to lead the program,” – the USSF said in a written statement. “As such, there is no specific timetable. We are developing a strategic approach to selecting the next head coach, and we will be thorough and methodical.

Dave Sarachan is a longtime collaborator of Bruce Arena who hired him as his assistant in 1984 at the University of Virginia. The pair then worked together in D.C. United, the U.S. squad from 1999 to 2002, and the Los Angeles Galaxy before returning to the U.S. team once again this year. As a head coach, Sarachan managed Cornell University and Chicago Fire.

As the USSF begins its search, a couple of high-profile names popped up as the early favorites. One of them is current Atlanta FC coach, Gerardo Martino who also managed Argentina and Barcelona in the past. Former PSG coach Laurent Blanc is also a favorite and might be more realistic option since he is currently unemployed.

The first big challenge for the new USMNT coach will be the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
