After taking the Los Angeles Dodgers to its second consecutive World Series appearance, the team’s manager Dave Roberts earned himself a four-year extension which will keep him with the team through 2022. Although the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, it is believed that Roberts, who earned $1 million in 2018, also received a healthy pay rise.

The news was confirmed by the Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman in a statement released on Monday.

“Keeping Doc as our leader on the field was a top priority this offseason and now that we’ve accomplished that we are excited to collectively shift all of our focus to doing all we can to bring a World Championship to our passionate fans,” – said Friedman.

Dave Roberts became Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager in 2016, after serving on several coaching positions with San Diego Padres. Roberts posted a 287- 200 record in his three seasons with the team while leading the Dodgers to World Series appearances in the last two years. In 2017 they lost to Houston Astros, while Boston Red Sox came on top in 2018.

“When I was hired to lead this team three years ago, I said at the time that managing the Dodgers is truly the opportunity of a lifetime, and I feel the exact same way today.” – said Roberts after inking the new deal. “We’ve worked hard to develop a team and culture that will put us in position to win the World Series every season, but we still have yet to achieve our ultimate goal and that is what drives me each day. I want to thank Andrew, [team president] Stan Kasten and our outstanding ownership group for believing in me and keeping me in Dodger Blue, a uniform I’m so proud to wear.”

Los Angeles Dodgers started the 2018 MLB season with a historically bad 16-26 record, but they still trust their manager Dave Roberts. Dodgers’ general manager Farhan Zaidi made an appearance on ESPNLA’s Mornings with Keyshawn, Jorge & LZ Show on Thursday and said that front office has “all the confidence” in Roberts.

“We, again, have all the confidence in him in the world,” – said Zaidi. “We said that during spring training when people asked about it. [We] haven’t seen anything in this first quarter of the season that has done anything to our confidence level with him.“

Los Angeles Dodgers are currently sitting in the last place in the National League West, and their current record is earliest they have been 10 games under .500 since 1929 season according to ESPN. This is also the first time since 2013 that they have been 10 games under .500 at either point of the season. According to Dave Roberts himself, the team currently finds itself in a slump but hopes that things will turn around for Dodgers.

“It’s a team-wide slump essentially,” – said Roberts. “I can’t recall anything like this, where we just haven’t had any semblance of consistency from any facet.“

“So for me, the coaches, try to encourage these guys to stay the course whether it’s out of the ‘pen, starters or timely hitting,” – he added. “There’s still a lot of good things as far as the way the guys are playing. Hopefully results will turn.“

This was an unexpectedly poor start of the season for Los Angeles Dodgers especially after their good showing in 2017. Dodgers had 104 wins in the last season, highest since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1958. They also managed to advance to the World Series, where they had the home field advantage but lost the series against Houston Astros 3-4.
