For a player that wasn’t a free agent, Philadelphia Eagles’ cornerback Darius Slay sure had a wild offseason. He asked to be traded after his extension talks with the team failed, was set to be released, and then ended up staying in Philadelphia on a new contract. But it turns out there is more to his story.

Speaking on his “Big Play Slay” podcast, Slay revealed that he almost joined the Baltimore Ravens before staying with the Eagles. According to the veteran, the Ravens were the first team that called him and “offered just what I wanted.”

“I was almost a Baltimore Raven,” said Slay. “But I wanted to be an Eagle. I stayed an Eagle because I knew we were going to figure something out.”

The major issue for Slay was that he was entering the final year of his deal and didn’t have any guaranteed money left. The Eagles, on the other hand, couldn’t afford to keep him on his current contract as it was set to carry a $26 million salary cap hit in 2023. The two sides eventually found a way to continue together by agreeing on a new three-year, $42 million deal.

Slay, who has five Pro Bowls on his resume, played an important part on the Eagles’ team that finished with the NFC-best 14-3 record in 2022 and reached the Super Bowl. He played all 17 games in the regular season, contributing with 55 tackles, 14 passes defended, and three interceptions.

After trading away safety Quandre Diggs to Seattle Seahawks last year, Detroit Lions might be looking to get rid of another strong locker room presence this offseason. According to ESPN, Lions have had trade discussions centered on Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay with multiple NFL teams in recent days.

This doesn’t represent an easy move for Lions since Slay has been their best defensive player for several years now. The 29-year-old had three Pro Bowl appearances in the last three years while being named First-Team All-Pro in 2017 when he also led the league in interceptions.

However, Slay has been growing dissatisfied with the organization in recent time, according to reports. He was taken aback with Diggs’ trade, which assured him that no one is safe in the dealings, including the veterans who spent their entire careers with the franchise.

Darius Slay is also approaching the last year of his contract and definitely wants to get paid sooner than later.  Since Lions seem to have been prolonging his extension, Slay is hopeful that some other team will give him a big contract he deserves. According to sources, the player is asking a number north of $15 million.

Slay entered the league in 2013 as a second-round pick. Since his rookie year, when he started 13 games, Slay has established himself as the team’s primary corner and never looked back. The level of his play especially rose in recent years, and he is considered one of the best CBs in the league at the moment.

Slay’s career numbers include 301 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 91 pass deflections, 17 interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.
