The Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay reportedly underwent knee surgery this week. However, the 32-year-old player won’t miss significant time and is expected to return before the 2023 regular season wraps up.

Slay started 12 games this season and was considered the bright spot in Philly’s underperforming secondary. He made 57 tackles and 14 pass deflections while also getting two picks and returning one for a touchdown.

The Eagles didn’t officially announce Slay’s surgery, although they listed him on their injury report. When asked about the veteran corner, Philadelphia’s head coach, Nick Sirianni, confirmed that Slay will miss the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks.

However, Sirianni refused to go into details about his plans for replacing Slay.

“Got the right guys. Got the right guys,” Sirianni said.

Last year’s undrafted free agent signing, Josh Jobe, is considered to have the best shot at getting the start against the Seahawks. Jobe, who already made three starts this year, has 20 tackles, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 13 games.

This year’s fourth-round selection, Kelee Ringo, could also get a nod. Ringo has mostly played on special teams so far in the season and has one fumble recovery to go with five tackles.

For a player that wasn’t a free agent, Philadelphia Eagles’ cornerback Darius Slay sure had a wild offseason. He asked to be traded after his extension talks with the team failed, was set to be released, and then ended up staying in Philadelphia on a new contract. But it turns out there is more to his story.

Speaking on his “Big Play Slay” podcast, Slay revealed that he almost joined the Baltimore Ravens before staying with the Eagles. According to the veteran, the Ravens were the first team that called him and “offered just what I wanted.”

“I was almost a Baltimore Raven,” said Slay. “But I wanted to be an Eagle. I stayed an Eagle because I knew we were going to figure something out.”

The major issue for Slay was that he was entering the final year of his deal and didn’t have any guaranteed money left. The Eagles, on the other hand, couldn’t afford to keep him on his current contract as it was set to carry a $26 million salary cap hit in 2023. The two sides eventually found a way to continue together by agreeing on a new three-year, $42 million deal.

Slay, who has five Pro Bowls on his resume, played an important part on the Eagles’ team that finished with the NFC-best 14-3 record in 2022 and reached the Super Bowl. He played all 17 games in the regular season, contributing with 55 tackles, 14 passes defended, and three interceptions.

The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired a long-sought target, trading for cornerback Darius Slay in a blockbuster deal with the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

Slay, who had been looking for a new contract in Detroit, will instead join the Eagles, with whom he immediately agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract extension that contains about $30 million in guaranteed money.

In exchange for their Pro Bowl cornerback, the rebuilding Lions will receive the Eagles’ 3rd round (85th overall) and 5th round (166th overall) picks in the upcoming Draft.

Despite winning the NFC East and narrowly making the playoffs last season, the Eagles were hampered by their secondary at many times. The team allowed way too many long passes last season, allowing 15 pass plays of 40-plus yards last season.

Now, they have at least one question mark in the secondary answered with the acquisition of the Georgia native. Slay is a three-time Pro Bowler, having been given the nod for his excellent work in each of the past three seasons.

After recording 8 interceptions in his breakout 2017 season, opposing offenses have largely ignored Slay’s side of the field. He recorded two interceptions and 46 tackles last season.

Now, he’ll look for a fresh start with a Philadelphia team that will be looking to contend for a playoff berth and a Super Bowl title in the upcoming season.
