The New York Giants were already underdogs for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. But their chances of walking away with a win became even slimmer on Friday after starting quarterback Daniel Jones was ruled out due to a neck injury.

Jones hurt his neck in last week’s 31-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins. He exited the game in the early fourth quarter and didn’t return.

Daboll told reporters that Jones is feeling better but isn’t 100% ready to get on the field.

“I think he’s getting better but not good enough to play for this game,” Daboll said.

While losing Jones is a tough blow for the Giants, Daboll believes that the offense is in a good place with backup Tyrod Taylor under center.

“Tyrod’s a pro,” he added. “He comes out every day and approaches it the right way in the backup situation, but he always approaches it as if he’s the starter. He’s had a good week, he’s prepared well, but he does that every week.”

Daniel Jones has been playing poorly to start 2023, throwing for only 884 yards and two touchdowns while having six interceptions. As a result, the Giants have been stuck at the bottom of the NFC East with only one win from their first five games.

The New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones recently switched agents, and his new representatives immediately got to work on securing him a new contract. And it appears that their approach from the start is to “go big or go home.”

The initial reports by sources close to the negotiations between the Giants and Jones suggested that the player was asking around $45 million annually to sign a new deal. However, with the change of agents came a change in the asking price. Jones’ new agents from Athletes First now want more than $45 million per year, which would make their client among the league’s top five highest-paid quarterbacks.

Daniel Jones played a solid season in 2022 after struggling to find his footing in the league in the previous three years. Despite this, it is highly unlikely the Giants would pay him like one of the best quarterbacks in the league. According to multiple reports, the New York team is willing to do between $35 million to $39 million annually to seal the deal but not more than that.

If Jones continues to insist on a big number, the Giants can franchise tag him and play him one more season to see if he’s actually worth it.

“Daniel played well this year. We’d like to have him back,” Joe Schoen told reporters earlier in the week. “We have different options whether it’s contract extension or utilizing the franchise tag. In an ideal world we’d get something done with him, and we’re gonna continue to work towards that.”

The New York Giants don’t seem to believe that quarterback Daniel Jones is the future of their franchise. This became clear on Thursday when the organization reportedly declined the fifth-year option on Jones’ rookie contract.

Jones, who was the sixth overall pick in 2019, is now set to become a free agent after this season. The Duke product would be scheduled to earn $22.39 million in 2023 on the fifth-year option if it was picked up.

This development doesn’t mean that the Giants have given up on Jones completely. The 24-year-old player is still expected to be a starter for the team in 2022 and will have one year to prove himself under new head coach Brian Daboll. If that turns out to be the case, New York can tie him to a long-term extension or place a franchise tag to keep him around.

The reason why the Giants didn’t want to risk with the fifth-year option is the way similar moves have worked out for other teams in the past. The Cleveland Browns picked up QB Baker Mayfield’s fifth-year option last year, only to move in another direction with a trade for Deshaun Watson this offseason. They are now stuck with Mayfield and his $18.86 million salary, which proved to be an obstacle in their efforts to trade him. The Carolina Panthers find themselves in a similar situation with Sam Darnold.

Daniel Jones had a promising rookie season with the Giants, throwing for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns in 13 games he played. However, he struggled in the following two years and managed only 21 TDs combined.

It looks like New York Giants will have to turn to Eli Manning once again to finish the season. According to NFL Network, Giants’ starting quarterback Daniel Jones will be forced to sit out two to four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. This means that the rookie will most likely miss the remainder of the season.

With Jones out, Manning reclaimed the starting position he lost in Week 3. This will be a chance for the two times Super Bowl MVP to say a proper goodbye to fans before a likely retirement at the end of the season.

Manning was a starter at the beginning of 2019, but he had two bad performances, in which he threw for 556 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, causing him to lose his job to Daniel Jones. Giants selected Jones sixth overall in the most recent NFL draft, and decided he will give them a better chance of competing this season.

Jones had his own ups and downs, managing to complete 61.6 percent of his passes for 2,374 and 18 TDs. Giants were 2-8 with Jones as their QB.

Giants play Miami Dolphins at home in Week 15, before facing Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles to finish off the season.

Eli Manning’s run as a starting quarterback of New York Giants has come to an end. Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur announced on Tuesday that Manning will be benched for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with rookie Daniel Jones taking over as a starter.

Manning hasn’t been on his usual level for the past several years, which is why the Giants drafted Jones with the 6th overall pick in this year’s draft. The initial idea was to let Jones sit for a year (or maybe two) behind Manning and then take over.

However, it seems like Jones’ stellar showing in the preseason and Manning’s struggles in Week 1 and 2 have made the Giants pull the trigger much sooner than expected.

“Eli and I spoke this morning,” – said Shurmur in a statement. “I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel.”

“Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday.” – he added.

Eli Manning became starting quarterback for the New York Giants midway through his rookie season in 2004 and has made franchise record of 232 starts since then. During his time at the helm of the Giants’ offense, Manning won two Super Bowls and two Super Bowl MVP awards while getting ahold of every important franchise record for a QB and several NFL record.

Despite his past successes, Manning has been mediocre at best in recent years, failing to lead the team to playoffs since 2016. In the two games he played this season, he threw for 556 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while Giants went 0-2.
