Alves joined Barcelona for his second stint in November on a minimum wage as part of efforts to help the club in times of financial crisis. He made his debut in January and went on to play 14 games in La Liga and contributed one goal and one assist.

It is believed that Alves had the intention to extend his stay with Barcelona, but the club felt they couldn’t offer him much playing time. They already have Sergino Dest on the right side and are looking to complete a transfer for Cesar Azpilicueta as well. This shouldn’t discourage Alves in his search for a new club, as he wants to represent Brazil at the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I would also like to thank all the staff for the opportunity they gave me to return to this club and to be able to wear that wonderful shirt again,” said Alves. “I am very grateful to those who decided to give me the opportunity to come back here to be able to say goodbye.”

In his first spell with Barca, Dani Alves spent eight years (2008-2016) at Camp Nou. He made 391 appearances during that period and won 22 trophies, including six La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions Leagues.

Brazilian veteran right-back Dani Alves could soon return to soccer, and if reports from UOL Esporte are true, he could do so in an FC Barcelona jersey.

Alves is currently a free agent after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo a couple of months ago. He was close to joining Fluminense in recent weeks but the talks with the Brazilian side have stalled after the opportunity to return to Nou Camp presented itself.

Reportedly, Barca would like to sign Alves in order to boost the competition on the right-back position, where they currently have USMNT’s Sergino Dest and Spaniard Sergi Roberto. It is believed that the club’s new manager Xavi also wouldn’t mind having his former teammate on the squad.

The move was previously hinted by Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta, who recently told the media that the club and Alves remain in touch.

“Dani is helping our club in many ways, he has also offered his help from a sporting point of view,” Laporta said.

The two sides are set to have talks about a potential move at some point this week with Alves being especially motivated to wrap them up successfully. The 38-year-old wants to make Brazil’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and thinks that playing with such a big club as Barca would significantly increase his chances to do so.

The 36-year old is the only footballer in history that has won a total of 40 titles across national club competitions. He was presented to over 40,000 fans at the Morumba Stadion in Sao Paulo, including many famous Brazilian footballers such as Ricardo Kaka, who handed him the Number 10 shirt upon his signing of the three-year contract, lasting until 2022.

Upon his arrival in Sao Paulo, Alves stated that he is a lifelong Sao Paulo supporter and that one of his wishes before the end of his career is to sign for them.

Dani Alves started his career in Bahia back in 2001. From there, he went on loan to the Spanish team Seville, signing a long-term contract with the Andalusian team in 2003 after the 2003 FIFA Youth Championship.

Following his rise in Sevilla, Dani Alves was signed by Barcelona in 2008, making him one of the most expensive defenders in history. That move to Barcelona launched Alves to the top of the European football for the years to come.

According to local media reports, Alves agreed to a two-year deal with his new club. The financial terms of the agreement remained undisclosed.

“I could have chosen anywhere to play, but I chose to return to Brazil” – said Alves after inking the deal.

Dani Alves’ decision to return to Brazil comes as a surprise, as he earlier expressed his intention to stay in European football and play for a contending team. Still, it seems like the 36-year-old didn’t receive a satisfactory offer that would keep him on the continent.

Alves spent most of his decorated career in Spanish La Liga, where he played for Sevilla and Barcelona. He played 641 games during his time in Spain and won close to 30 trophies with these two clubs. 

By bringing in Alves, Sao Paulo is expected to drop out of the race for former Atletico Madrid right-back Juanfran. This means that the Spaniard is most likely to come to MLS, where Chicago Fire and Nashville remain interested in his services.
