Dana White finally accepted Khabib Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire and leave the UFC lightweight champion belt vacant.

White, who serves as UFC’s president, told ESPN earlier this week that he recently had another meeting with Nurmagomedov and tried to convince him to fight again. The Dagestani fighter rejected the proposal and prompted the promotion to start preparing for life after.

“Khabib is retired and doesn’t wanna hold up the division,” said White. “Tonight was our final meeting, and he is retired.”

According to White, Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler will get the chance to claim the vacant UFC lightweight title. The two fighters are expected to face on May 15th at UFC 262.

Oliveira has been with the UFC since 2010, switching between lightweight and featherweight a couple of times. The 31-year-old fighter has a 30-8 MMA record and is currently riding an eight-fight winning streak. His last fight was in December when he defeated Tony Ferguson at UFC 256 via unanimous decision.

Chandler, on the other hand, is a new face in UFC. He made his debut with the promotion at UFC 257 with a TKO win over Dan Hooker.

The 34-year-old fighter spent the majority of his MMA career with Bellator. He was the promotion’s three-time Lightweight Champion while also winning the Bellator Season Four Lightweight Tournament.

On July 29, 2017, in a fight against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, Jon Jones regained the UFC light heavyweight champion title. Now, as it turns out, his reign could be over soon since he failed the drug test taken before the match. UFC released a statement on Tuesday saying that “UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Jon Jones of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected following his weigh-in on July 28, 2017.

According to TMZ sources, Jones was positive for an anabolic steroid called Turinabol. Although UFC president Dana White said Jones isn’t stripped of the title, that looks imminent. Jones’ camp issued an official statement that you can read in full below.

We are all at a complete loss for words right now. Jon, his trainers, his nutritionists and his entire camp have worked tirelessly and meticulously the past 12 months to avoid this exact situation. We are having the samples tested again to determine the validity or source of contamination. Jon is crushed by this news and we are doing whatever we can as a team, to support him.

This isn’t the first time that Jones failed a drug test. In July of 2016, he was positive for anti-estrogenic agents. He was stripped of his title and had to serve one year ban issued by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency). Before that, Jones was stripped of his title in 2015, after he was involved in a hit-and-run incident. This was the only time UFC took the title from the fighter for reasons unrelated to the sport.

Jon Jones is regarded by many as one of the greatest mixed martial artists. He also holds the longest active winning streak in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. His record in 24 fights is 23 wins and one loss by disqualification.
