Atlanta Falcons running back Damien Williams has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced on Saturday. This came after Williams incurred a rib injury.

The running back suffered his injury during the second drive of the Falcons’ season opener against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday as a defensive lineman fell on him. Although Williams returned to action in the fourth quarter to play in 10 snaps, he was not able to prevent his side from suffering a narrow 27-26 defeat.

Williams is expected to be out for at least a month, meaning that Atlanta will most likely have to rely on the skills of rookie running back Tyler Allgeier, the team’s fifth-round draft pick out of BYU. While Allgeier did train during the preseason with the first team, he was absent from the Falcons’ lineup for the season opener.

Alternatively, the Falcons could look to former cornerback Avery Williams, who transitioned to the running back position during the offseason and is also the team’s punt returner. Caleb Huntley is another viable option, having been elevated from the practice squad.

Portland Trail Blazers star player Damian Lillard dislocated his finger during Thursday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, the team said that the X-rays came back negative, which means he won’t need surgery and should be back quickly. Lillard believes that he won’t have to miss any time at all.

The star guard, who has been the best player in the entire NBA since the season restarted in the bubble after the COVID-19 break, says that he is going to play in Game 3 of the series.

At the time of the injury, Portland was already down by 20 points, so there was no reason to try to rush Lillard back into the game.

Asked about his availability for Game 3, Lillard told the press that he was certain that he’s going to be out on the court.

“Oh, I’m playing,” he told reporters, adding that there is some swelling and that his finger feels sore.

This is obviously good news for the Trail Blazers, who have been carried into the playoffs by Lillard’s almost super-human performances day in and day out. Lillard had 40 points or more in four games, lifting the team into the playoffs and capturing the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.

Their series with the Lakers is tied up at one a piece.

The Kansas City Chiefs found out on Wednesday that they will be unable to rely on the services of a second offensive who will opt out of the upcoming NFL season due to coronavirus concerns.

Williams, who appeared in 11 games and started 6 for the Chiefs last season, establishing himself as the team’s #1 back down the stretch, informed the team of his decision earlier in the week.

The 28-year-old running back, who is married and has a young daughter, is not known to have any conditions that would qualify him for the higher-paid COVID-19 exemption if he follows through with his decision and doesn’t play this season. His decision may simply be based on the fact that he wants to protect his family from possible infection.

It won’t be easy for Kansas City to replace Williams in its backfield, as the former undrafted free agent put together good work down the stretch and in the playoffs for the defending Super Bowl champions. Williams rushed for 104 yards in the Super Bowl, scoring a touchdown, and also caught 4 passes and contributed a receiving touchdown in his team’s win.

While he was penciled in as the team’s starter at the position this season, the Chiefs will now have to look at secondary options such as first round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire to carry the ball.
