Their All-Star point guard Damian Lillard aggravated his Achilles in a 121-118 overtime loss to the Indiana Pacers on Friday and is now facing a race against time to be ready for Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the two teams.

Lillard initially tweaked his ankle in the first quarter but returned to the court after a short visit to the locker room. But late in the fourth quarter, Lillard experienced issues with his Achilles, which limited his impact. He didn’t attempt a single shot in the overtime as the Pacers snatched Game 3 and took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Lillard said that he hopes he can bounce back in time to play in Game 4.

“It’s one of those spots on your body where you literally can’t, you can’t do nothing about it. If you can’t move, you can’t move. We have a couple of days to start and try to get ahead of it. Get it feeling better and get ready for Sunday,” said Lillard.

If Lillard is unable to go against the Pacers, the Bucks will be in a tough situation. They are already without their superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has been out since early April with a calf strain. Things have turned from bad to worse for the struggling Portland Trail Blazers. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Blazers superstar Damian Lillard is expected to undergo surgery that could sideline him between six and eight weeks.

Lillard aggravated an abdominal injury back in the summer while playing for Team USA and never fully recovered. The injury has been a lingering issue for the All-Star guard in the 2021-22 NBA season and caused his production to take a significant dip. After weighing his options, Lillard decided to have the procedure as he believes this will give him the best chance to return to the All-NBA form from last season.

Windhorst added in his report that the surgery date and timetable for Lillard’s return would be determined by the end of the week following further medical consultations.

If the reports turn out to be accurate, then we might not see Damian Lillard play again this season. The Trail Blazers are already in the lottery with a 16-24 record, and it’s hard to see them turning things around without Lillard. Once he returns, it will probably be too late for any postseason push, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Portland decides to shut down their best player and turn focus to 2022-23.

Lillard got injured midway through the third quarter after landing awkwardly during a drive to the basket. The 30-year-old guard went to the locker room after the possession before returning to court several minutes after. However, he exited the game again after several plays and did not return.

Following the game, Lillard underwent an MRI, but according to the team, the results were “inconclusive.” He underwent a second MRI later on Tuesday, which revealed a knee strain.

After the most recent loss, Blazers find themselves on the brink of elimination as Lakers took 3-1 lead in the series. The Game 5 is set to tip-off on Wednesday, and without Damian Lillard, Portland’s chances of surviving seem slim.
