Former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel was designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. The move, confirmed by the franchise on social media, came after Keuchel posted a 9.64 ERA and zero wins in his four starts since late June.

Keuchel’s roster spot will be taken by veteran righty Ian Kennedy, who is coming back from a 15-day spell on the injured list.

Keuchel started the season with the Chicago White Sox but was out after struggling to start the season. The White Sox were so desperate to get rid of the 34-year-old player that they were willing to eat up his $18 million salary and $1.5 million buyout for 2023.

After clearing waivers, the two-time All-Star came to Arizona, where he was expected to pick up his form following a change of scenery and reunion with his former pitching coach Brent Strom. However, it turned out that scenery wasn’t the problem, and now Keuchel is back on the free agent market.

Keuchel did rack up 38 strikeouts with the White Sox and the Diamondbacks, which could be enough for some team to take a chance on him before the season wraps up. However, the veteran is probably looking at a minor league deal at best.

Over the course of his 11 years in the MLB, Keuchel posted a 101–89 record with a 3.92 ERA and 1,211 strikeouts. He has two All-Star nods, Cy Young Award from 2015, and a World Series win with the Houston Astros in 2017.

Veteran left-hander Dallas Keuchel was added to the IL on Thursday ahead of his scheduled weekend start against the Detroit Tigers. The move was made retroactive to September 7th, which means that he could join the team again next week.

Keuchel was a member of the White Sox’s 1-2 starting pitching punch along with Lucas Giolito. The offseason signing, who inked a 3-year, $55 million deal with the South Siders, currently has a 6-2 record with a 2.19 ERA for the contending Sox.

The veteran lefty exited early during his last start against the Kansas City Royals due to his back issues, leaving the game after just 5 innings pitched despite allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs.

Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, is expected to undergo treatment over the coming days in a bid to have him healthy and ready ahead of the final weeks of the regular season.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that Keuchel and White Sox agreed to a three-year deal, worth $55.5 million. The contract also has a fourth-year option that comes with $18.5 million in compensation for the 31-year-old left-hander.

Keuchel was a free agent prior to the 2019 MLB season as well but opted to wait deep into the year in order to sign with a playoff team. He ended up getting a one-year deal, worth $13 million from Atlanta Braves.

Keuchel ended up playing 19 games in the regular season, having an 8-8 record with a 3.75 ERA and 91 strikeouts. He also helped the Braves advance to the National League Divisional Series, where they lost to St. Louis Cardinals.
