The Chicago White Sox was forced to place one of its top starting pitchers on the injured list on Thursday after back spasms bothered him enough that he would not be able to make his next start.

Veteran left-hander Dallas Keuchel was added to the IL on Thursday ahead of his scheduled weekend start against the Detroit Tigers. The move was made retroactive to September 7th, which means that he could join the team again next week.

Keuchel was a member of the White Sox’s 1-2 starting pitching punch along with Lucas Giolito. The offseason signing, who inked a 3-year, $55 million deal with the South Siders, currently has a 6-2 record with a 2.19 ERA for the contending Sox.

The veteran lefty exited early during his last start against the Kansas City Royals due to his back issues, leaving the game after just 5 innings pitched despite allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs.

Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, is expected to undergo treatment over the coming days in a bid to have him healthy and ready ahead of the final weeks of the regular season.

The White Sox have not yet announced a starter for Saturday’s game, which Keuchel was scheduled to pitch.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that Keuchel and White Sox agreed to a three-year deal, worth $55.5 million. The contract also has a fourth-year option that comes with $18.5 million in compensation for the 31-year-old left-hander.

Keuchel was a free agent prior to the 2019 MLB season as well but opted to wait deep into the year in order to sign with a playoff team. He ended up getting a one-year deal, worth $13 million from Atlanta Braves.

Keuchel ended up playing 19 games in the regular season, having an 8-8 record with a 3.75 ERA and 91 strikeouts. He also helped the Braves advance to the National League Divisional Series, where they lost to St. Louis Cardinals.

Before signing Dallas Keuchel, White Sox brought in All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal, outfielder Nomar Mazara, catcher James McCann, and pitcher Gio Gonzalez. The team also inked All-Star first baseman Jose Abreu to an extension.
