D.C. United’s search for a new head coach has reportedly come to a conclusion. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, the MLS side is expected to hire Troy Lesesne to helm the team in the 2024 season.

Lesesne started the 2023 campaign as the assistant with the New York Red Bulls before taking over as interim head coach following the departure of Gerhard Struber. In 32 games in charge, Lesesne recorded 14 wins while promoting an attacking playing style. Despite this, the Red Bulls opted not to retain the 40-year-old and instead search for a new permanent solution.

Lesesne previously served as the head coach of the New Mexico United in the USL Championship. During his time in charge, he had a 34-29-25 record while making the playoffs twice. He also led the team to the quarterfinal stage of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 2018.

D.C. United will hope that Lesesne can help the franchise put an end to a four-season playoff drought. In 2023, the club finished 12th in the Eastern Conference and was eliminated in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.

United, which parted ways with Wayne Rooney in October, reportedly considered several other names, including ex-NYCFC head coach Dome Torrent and former USMNT international Hugo Pérez. Torrent was at one point considered the favorite for the job, but the talks between the two sides broke down due to salary demands.

After conceding MLS-leading 43 goals so far in the season, D.C. United decided to add some competition between the posts. According to multiple reports, United has made a deal with Real Salt Lake to acquire talented goalkeeper David Ochoa.

Ochoa, who is a free agent after the season ends, arrives in exchange for allocation money that will include the undisclosed amount in 2023 and additional money based on incentives. Real Salt Lake will also be entitled to additional compensation if the 21-year-old player re-signs with D.C. United.

Ochoa made his professional debut with Real Monarchs in USL in 2018 before working his way to the first team. He played two games in MLS in 2020 before taking over Salt Lake’s starting job in 2021.

The Oxnard, California native had an encouraging campaign last season, making 25 starts and making 83 saves. He was particularly important for Real during the MLS Cup playoffs, helping his team to Conference Finals with some memorable performances.

Ochoa hasn’t played at all in 2022 as he was dealing with injuries. He should now get a chance to bounce back with D.C. United and set himself up for a new contract in 2023. Recent reports indicated that there is some interest in him from Europe, where Barcelona B would like to make him part of their squad.

Despite the fact that D.C. United had another early playoff exit in 2018, the front office decided that manager Ben Olsen did enough to get another contract extension. United announced on Thursday that Olsen received a three-year extension and will stay with the organization through 2021.  

“This is a very important step for us,” – said owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan in a statement. “Ben is a special part of our club’s rich history and a major part of our future. He delivered one of his best performances as our on-field leader this past season, establishing a strong culture and winning foundation. We cannot wait to see what we can achieve together in the coming seasons.”

Ben Olsen has been with D.C. United in some capacity for the last 21 years, and serves as the team’s manager since August 2010. This makes him the second most-tenured head coach in the Major League Soccer behind Sporting Kansas City’s Peter Vermes.

“I am proud and humbled to have been associated with this club for the last 21 years.” – said Olsen after inking the deal. “I am thrilled that ownership has shown faith in the path my staff and I are taking with this extension. Our aim is to continue to put a team on the field that our fans and community will identify with and be proud of. The major goal, however, remains the same since the day I took the job and that’s to bring trophies back to D.C.”

Ben Olsen has a compiled a 111-75-130 record during his time with D.C., and has managed to get to the playoffs five times while winning Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013. His biggest success in MLS Cup playoffs was Eastern Conference Championship game in 2015.

After D.C. United managed to land Everton star Wayne Rooney, it was rumored that Patrick Mullins will have to find playing time somewhere else. This turned out to be true since Mullins left United on Wednesday and joined the Columbus Crew SC, who sent $150,000 in targeted allocation money in exchange.

“Patrick is a proven goalscorer who is dangerous inside the box and has a solid track record in MLS in his first five seasons,” – said Columbus head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter. “We believe that he brings a valuable skill set that will allow him to add depth to our attack and we look forward to integrating him into the team.“

While Columbus will get a valuable contributor from the bench with Mullins, this transfer will also give United some room to address their roster weaknesses.

The deal to bring Wayne Rooney to the United States has been in the works for several weeks now, and player’s agents recently visited Washington to iron out smaller details. The 32-year-old will receive a contract throughout the 2020 MLS season, becoming the team’s highest-paid player.

Although it looks that the move to MLS is inevitable for former England national team captain, Everton would sure like to keep Rooney for the next season as well.

“There have been rumors about Wayne going abroad, China or America, but we won’t find out until Wayne and his agent have been contacted and whether he feels like he wants to be here or not.” – said Everton’s head coach Sam Allardyce . “At the moment he is an Everton fan as well as an Everton player so I wouldn’t consider anything is on the cards at the moment.“

“It would have to be massive for him to want to leave Everton.” – added Allardyce while dismissing reports that Rooney might be unsatisfied with his role on the team.

D.C. United has finished with the process of acquiring midfielder Yamil Asad from Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield. In order to land Asad, United had to make a trade with Atlanta United, who had Asad’s MLS rights and where the 23-year-old spent the last season. Atlanta will receive $300,000 in targeted allocation money and $200,000 in general allocation money in exchange for the rights.

D.C. United brought Asad on loan, paying $300,000 in loan fees to Velez, and will have to pay another $700,000 if they want to make the full transfer at the end of the season.
