After D.C. United managed to land Everton star Wayne Rooney, it was rumored that Patrick Mullins will have to find playing time somewhere else. This turned out to be true since Mullins left United on Wednesday and joined the Columbus Crew SC, who sent $150,000 in targeted allocation money in exchange.

Patrick Mullins has played in 10 games for D.C. United in this season, but failed to score a goal while contributing one assist. In the previous two years, however, he scored 13 goals in 34 games (24 starts).

“Patrick is a proven goalscorer who is dangerous inside the box and has a solid track record in MLS in his first five seasons,” – said Columbus head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter. “We believe that he brings a valuable skill set that will allow him to add depth to our attack and we look forward to integrating him into the team.“

While Columbus will get a valuable contributor from the bench with Mullins, this transfer will also give United some room to address their roster weaknesses.

“This move will provide us with assets and flexibility for future moves. We wish Mullins the best in Columbus and thank him for his service to the club.” – said D.C. general manager Dave Kasper in a statement.

D.C. United has finished with the process of acquiring midfielder Yamil Asad from Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield. In order to land Asad, United had to make a trade with Atlanta United, who had Asad’s MLS rights and where the 23-year-old spent the last season. Atlanta will receive $300,000 in targeted allocation money and $200,000 in general allocation money in exchange for the rights.

D.C. United brought Asad on loan, paying $300,000 in loan fees to Velez, and will have to pay another $700,000 if they want to make the full transfer at the end of the season.

“Yamil is a bright talent in MLS, who was a major contributor to Atlanta’s successful inaugural campaign,” – said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper. “His pace, skill, and creativity in wide areas will provide us with an additional attacking dimension. He’s a young player who plays with a big personality and a high work rate, and he will continue to develop and improve with more experience in this league. We’re thrilled to add him.“

Yamil Asad was in great shape in the 32 games he played in MLS for Atlanta, scoring 7 goals and adding 13 assists. Atlanta United had the intention to keep Asad but couldn’t secure another loan for the player, failing to reach an agreement on personal terms.

With this move D.C. United has continued reshaping its squad that finished last in the Eastern Conference in 2017, managing to win just 32 points from 34 matches. The team previously added wingers Zoltan Stieber and USMNT’s Paul Arriola, forward Darren Mattocks and midfielders Junior Moreno and Ulises Segura. In the next season, United will also begin playing on a new stadium, Audi Field, which will finish with construction in July.
