The NHL announced Edmonton Oilers superstar center Connor McDavid as the league’s most valuable player for the 2020-21 season. The 24-year-old star will be awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy after picking up all 100 first-place votes from Professional Hockey Writers Association voters.

This is the second time in NHL history that a player was given the MVP unanimously. The only other player to win the award in the same fashion was Wayne Gretzky, who got all first-place votes in 1981-82 while also playing for the Oilers.

McDavid wrapped up the 2020-21 regular season with 33 and 72 assists for a total of 105 points in 56 games. He led the NHL in assists and points at the end of the campaign.

McDavid received several other honors for his efforts this season. His peers voted him as the Ted Lindsay Award recipient, while he also picked up his third career Art Ross Trophy and got selected to NHL First All-Star Team.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t carry over his good run to the Stanley Cup playoffs as Edmonton got swept in the first round by the Winnipeg Jets.

Center Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs finished as a runner-up in Hart Memorial Trophy voting, picking up 69 second-place votes, while Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon rounded up the top three.
