The Cleveland Guardians have traded right-hand pitcher Cal Quantrill to the Colorado Rockies. The Guardians will receive minor league catcher Kody Huff in exchange.

Quantrill was traded after being designated for assignment on Wednesday. This means that the Rockies will be on the hook for his $6.6 million salary in 2024 and arbitration-eligible year in 2025.

Quantrill had an outstanding season with the Guardians in 2022, making 32 starts and going 15-5 with a 3.38 ERA and a career-high 128 strikeouts. In 2023, however, it was a completely different story.

Struggling with a series of injuries, Quantrill never found a consistency that would help him become indispensable for Cleveland again. He had a 4-7 record in 19 starts while recording a career-worst 5.24 ERA.

It was an easy decision for the Guardians to cut ties with Quantrill after a disappointing season. The team has an abundance of young pitchers that could provide much better value than an underperforming veteran. They also get Huff, who hasn’t shown he is ready for the majors, but could be a long-term project for the team.

The Rockies, on the other hand, hope Quantrill can regain some of his past form after becoming fully healthy. If that happens, they will have a great rotational piece for a reasonable price.

The Colorado Rockies are convinced that their right-hand pitcher Germán Márquez will return to the top level even after undergoing a Tommy John procedure in May. This is why the franchise opted to sign Márquez to a contract extension despite the fact he will miss most of the 2024 campaign.

The Rockies had a $16 million option on Márquez for 2024 that came with a $2.5 million buyout. Instead of picking it up or buying out the 28-year-old, the team opted to give him a new two-year extension that is worth $20 million. Márquez will also have an option to earn $10 million extra in 2025 in performance-based bonuses.

“Germán has been an integral part of the Rockies organization both on and off the field since his first Major League season in 2016,” Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said in a statement. “We are excited to secure Germán’s future in Denver with this extension and can’t wait to see him back out on the mound.”

Márquez made his debut with the Rockies in 2016 and has since compiled a 65–56 record with a 4.41 ERA and 983 strikeouts. He won the Silver Slugger Award in 2018 and received an All-Star selection in 2021. The Venezuela native made four starts in 2023 before the injury, going 2-2 with a 4.95 ERA and 17 strikeouts.

The Colorado Rockies are not wasting any time getting ready for the 2022 MLB season. Just two days after wrapping up their 2021 season, which saw them miss the playoffs with a 74-87 record, the Rockies went ahead and locked their right-hander Antonio Senzatela to a long-term extension.

The Rockies made the news official on Twitter, revealing that Senzatela inked a five-year deal that will keep him with the franchise through at least the 2026 MLB season. The agreement also includes a club option for 2027.

In the same tweet, Colorado also announced that first baseman C.J. Cron inked a two-year extension with the franchise.

The financial details of Senzatela’s new deal were not made public, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the 26-year-old pitcher is set to earn $50.5 million between 2022 and 2026. The club option for 2027 is reportedly worth $14 million.

Antonio Senzatela joined the Colorado Rockies organization as an amateur free agent back in 2012. After spending five years in the minors, he made his MLB debut in 2017 and delivered a solid rookie campaign that earned him the National League’s Rookie of the Month award in April.

Senzatela has a 36–35 record in the majors with 4.84 ERA and 393 strikeouts. He finished the 2021 season with 4-10 records, 4.42 ERA, and career-high 105 strikeouts.

Colorado Rockies veteran outfielder Ian Desmond won’t play baseball for the second consecutive season. After previously opting out in 2020, Desmond announced over the weekend that he’ll do the same in 2021.

Posting a story on Instagram, Desmond wrote that he will stay out “for now” and that he wants to spend time with his family. He will continue with the training and has left the door open for a potential change of heart.

“I’ve let my teammates know, as well as the coaching staff and the front office, and they have all been extremely understanding and supportive,” he added.

Desmond’s opt-out probably means he has played his last game in a Rockies jersey. He is out of contract after this season, and it’s highly unlikely that Colorado will be willing to activate the $15 million option to keep him in 2022.

The 35-year-old veteran joined the Rockies in 2017 on a five-year deal after he had an All-Star campaign with the Texas Rangers. Since landing with Colorado, Desmond has batted .252 while amassing 337 hits, 49 homers, and 193 RBIs.

Desmond also played with the Washington Nationals, who gave him his MLB debut in 2009. A career .263 batter, he has two All-Star selections and three Silver Slugger awards to his name.

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Colorado Rockies in which they will acquire superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado, a 5-time All-Star and 8-time Gold Glove Award winner.

The Rockies have committed to a rebuild and thus made the decision to shop their biggest star this offseason. They found a proper suitor in St. Louis, who will now take on the California native’s hefty contract with six years remaining.

Colorado will send $50 million along with Arenado to the Cardinals to help cover the cost of his massive contract, and St. Louis will send a package of prospects that have yet to be revealed in return.

Despite a down year in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, Arenado has built a reputation as one of the game’s most reliable players thanks to his power production and stellar defense at the hot corner.

He hit only .253 with 8 home runs in 2020, but finished each season from 2015 to 2019 with a .280 batting average or higher and at least 37 home runs.

The deal has yet to be officially announced by the two teams, but expect the news to break from the teams early this week.

The Colorado Rockies and Cincinnati Reds agreed to one of the first trades of the MLB offseason on Wednesday, agreeing to a swap including pitchers Robert Stephenson and Jeff Hoffman.

The Rockies acquired Stephenson and outfield prospect Jameson Hannah, while the Reds picked up Hoffman and pitching prospect Case Williams.

This trade represents a gamble on a change of scenery for both Stephenson and Hoffman, who have been unable to consistently pitch well during their Big League time with their previous teams.

After a decent 2019 in which he posted a 3.76 ERA in 57 appearances, Stephenson fell apart for the Reds in 2020, posting a ghastly 9.90 ERA in 10 games.

Hoffman, on the other hand, never lived up to his potential as a top prospect during his five seasons in Colorado. The long-time starter was converted to a reliever in 2020 but continued to struggle, posting a 9.28 ERA in 16 appearances.

Both players will look to win a spot in their new teams’ bullpens next season, while Cincinnati will hope that Williams and Colorado will hope that Hannah will contribute at some time in the future.

Expect more moves from both of these teams over the coming months in preparation for the 2021 season.

The Colorado Rockies are getting a big reinforcement ahead of their final stretch of games in the 2020 MLB regular season. The team confirmed on Wednesday that they have activated All-Star outfielder David Dahl from the Injured List and expect him to return to the starting lineup soon.

Dahl spent the previous three weeks on IL, having dealt with back issues that limited him to 19 games in 2020. He struggled in the first part of the season and currently has a batting average of .189 with zero home runs and seven RBIs.

“We’re going to take it day by day,” Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters. “We have 18 games left, and David has been down for a while. Hopefully, he can make a contribution in some way.”

The Rockies hope that the time off helped David Dahl rediscover his form and that he’ll be able to give his contribution to the team’s postseason bid. Dahl was one of Colorado’s best players in 2019, batting .302 and earning an All-Star selection. He also had 15 homers and 61 RBIs.

The Rockies are currently out of the playoff picture with a 20-23 record but can get in if they are able to string together series of good results. They are currently 1.5 games behind Miami Marlins, who hold the last playoff spot in National League, while the seventh-seeded San Francisco Giants are also not so far ahead.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond announced in an Instagram post on Monday that he will opt out of the 2020 season due to concerns about the safety of his family in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Desmond, an 11-year Big League veteran, signed a five-year, $70 million contract with Colorado prior to the 2017 season and has generally disappointed with slow production since joining the club.

While 2020 could have been an opportunity for the veteran to have a bounceback season, he announced in his Instagram post that he simply did not feel comfortable with returning to work. This means that Colorado will not be forced to pay the contract money which he is owed this season.

“With a pregnant wife and four young children who have lots of questions about what’s going on in the world, home is where I need to be right now,” Desmond stated in the post. “Home for my wife, Chelsey. Home to help. Home to guide. Home to answer my older three boys’ questions about Coronavirus and Civil Rights and life. Home to be their Dad.”

The Florida native, who hit .255 with 20 home runs for the Rockies in 2019, will instead look to the 2021 season to rejoin his team.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story has been sent to the injured list after suffering a scary hand injury in the Rockies’ 6-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Colorado recalled Brendan Rodgers to take Story’s place on the roster during the time that he will miss with the injury.

A left thumb strain isn’t an ideal situation for Story and the Rockies, who will certainly miss the slugging shortstop’s production in their lineup during the time that he will miss. However, the injury looked ugly and things certainly could’ve been worse.

In any case, it appears that Story will miss approximately 2-4 weeks with his injury, and the Rockies are going to miss his production in their lineup. The 26-year-old shortstop has been one of the top players at his position in the league this year, and is batting a robust .294 with 17 home runs on the season.

The Rockies, who currently sit at 40-34 and lead the chase for the NL Wild Card, can’t afford for the talented shortstop to miss too much time. They’ll hope to have him back before the All-Star Break, and they’ll look to continue their hot run even during Story’s absence.

The Rockies and their franchise cornerstone, Nolan Arenado, will continue together for the next several years after the two parties agreed to a big contract extension.

Arenado, considered by many to be the best third baseman in baseball, agreed to sign a contract extension for 6 seasons worth $260 million with the team that drafted him back in 2009.

The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best players in baseball over the past several seasons. In addition to being widely considered as the best defensive third baseman in the game, he is also a prolific power hitter.

The talented third baseman has won the NL Gold Glove award as the best defensive third baseman in the league every season since making his debut with Colorado in 2013.

In addition, Arenado has twice led the MLB in home runs during his first six seasons with Colorado. He hit 42 home runs in 2015 and 41 in 2016 to lead the league.

The California native has been named an All-Star for the past four consecutive seasons. He has also garnered four consecutive Silver Slugger awards as the top offensive player at his position in Major League Baseball.

Arenado and the Rockies will look to continue their recent success together. The Rockies have made the playoffs in the past two seasons, their first playoff berths since the franchise´s only World Series appearance back in 2007.
