The Colorado Rapids are working hard to strengthen their roster after finishing at the bottom of the Western Conference in the 2023 MLS season. According to The Athletic, the Rapids are putting the finishing touches on a transfer for AZ Alkmaar’s attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic.

The deal, which is pending a medical, is expected to set a club record with a transfer fee of more than $3 million. Mihailovic will reportedly sign a Designated Player contract.

Mihailovic made his professional debut in 2017 with the Chicago Fire. He spent four years with the club, scoring seven goals in 76 matches before making his way to CF Montréal. After a couple of stellar seasons in Canada, Mihailovic secured a $6 million move to Alkmaar.

Mihailovic’s time in the Netherlands didn’t go as well as planned. He struggled to break into the starting lineup and only played in eight games in 2023-24. The 25-year-old player will end his stint with Alkmaar with 36 matches and two goals.

The Rapids plan to make several other moves ahead of the 2024 season. The MLS side is reportedly also nearing a deal with Manchester City that would see them land former USMNT goalie Zack Steffen.

MLS side Colorado Rapids is reportedly in talks with Manchester City about the acquisition of U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen. According to a report by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, the negotiations between the two teams have been “complicated” but “progressing”.

Steffen is under contract with the Premier League side through the 2024-25 season. He is currently sidelined with a knee injury that required him to get surgery back in the summer.

Getting Steffen would be a big coup for Colorado Rapids. Despite his inability to get regular playing time with City, the 28-year-old would immediately become one of the best goalies in the MLS. The Rapids are in need of reliable goalkeeping, considering they conceded 54 goals in the 2023 regular season, one of the major reasons why they finished at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Zack Steffen played four seasons in MLS with Columbus Crew SC before securing a $7 million transfer to Manchester City in 2019. During his time with the club, Steffen made 21 appearances while also being sent out on season-long loans with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Middlesbrough.

Steffen previously served as the No.1 goalie for the United States men’s national team but recently lost his spot. He played only three international games in 2022 and wasn’t part of the roster that went to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Former Colorado Rapids winger Sam Nicholson, who surprisingly left the club earlier this season after terminating his contract with the MLS club, has found a new home in England as he returns to the old continent to play.

Nicholson, who scored 6 goals and chipped in with 5 assists in 68 games during his spell in the United States, returns to his home island to play for the League One’s Bristol Rovers.

The former Scottish youth international signed with Minnesota United in 2017 after leaving the Premiership’s Heart of Midlothian when his contract expired.

Nicholson spent under a year with Minnesota United before being traded to Colorado, where he was a regular starter for the team down the stretch in 2018 and then throughout the 2019 season.

He left the club earlier this year after expressing a desire to return to the United Kingdom, agreeing to terminate his contract with Colorado back in February.

Nicholson will have the opportunity to do so with his new club as he helps to look them make a push to England’s second tier of soccer in the 2020-21 season. His deal will keep him with the Pirates through the end of the 2021-22 season.

Colorado Rapids and Sam Nicholson are parting ways. According to the team’s official announcement, the two sides agreed to mutually terminate Nicholson’s contract.

Nicholson joined Rapids in 2018 in a trade with Minnesota United. Since then, the Scottish winger played 50 games with the team in all competitions, contributing with four goals and six assists. 

The news comes as a surprise, considering that Nicholson was a regular starter for Rapids in the past.

“This was a difficult decision for all parties involved, but ultimately the right one for Sam and his family’s well-being,” said Colorado general manager Padraig Smith in a statement for club’s official website. “Since arriving two years ago, Sam has played a crucial role in driving the club forward toward our goals, and we’re grateful to him for his contributions on and off the pitch. He will always be a part of the Rapids family, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Sam Nicholson started his career in his native Scotland, making professional debut with Heart of Midlothian in 2013. After five seasons with Hearts, Nicholson joined Minnesota midway through the 2017 MLS season.

Colorado Rapids failed to win a single game in 2019 MLS season which prompted team’s general manager Padraig Smith to start making some roster moves in an attempt to save the season. The biggest move came on Wednesday, when Rapids acquired U.S. international forward Jonathan Lewis from NYFC.

Colorado had to pay a significant price for Lewis, sending $650,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) for 2020, and an international roster spot in 2020 to New York. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Jonathan to Colorado,” – said Smith in a statement. “He is one of the best young, attacking talents in the United States, a dynamic game changer with the potential to develop into an elite level attacker in MLS. His age, character and skillset fit perfectly with the type of player we want to bring to Colorado and with the plans we have for the future of our club.”

Jonathan Lewis started his professional career with English League One side Bradford City in 2015 before being drafted third overall by NYFC in 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He played a total of 32 games in MLS since then, and managed to score three goals alongside four assists. Colorado Rapids decided to reinforce their defense for the 2019 season with an All-Star addition. The team announced on Wednesday that they had acquired U.S. international defender Keegan Rosenberry from Philadelphia Union.

In order to get Rosenberry, who is considered one of the most talented young defenders in the league, Rapids gave away up to $400,000 in allocation money. Philadelphia will receive $150,000 in General Allocation Money and $50,000 in Targeted Allocation Money next year while getting $100,000 in 2020. Colorado will give up another $100,000 in allocation money in 2020 if certain conditions are met.
