The return of veteran quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the NFL has received an endorsement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. In a recent chat with ESPN, Goodell said he supports Kaepernick’s comeback to the league and is encouraging teams to sign him.

Kaepernick gained prominence for kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest racial inequality. Following the end of the season, he opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers after the team reportedly planned to release him. Kaepernick has remained unsigned since, with many arguing that his activism is the main reason for this.

For his part, Goodell says he would welcome Kaepernick back in the league.

“Well, listen, if he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then obviously it’s gonna take a team to make that decision,” said Goodell. “But I welcome that, support a club making that decision, and encourage them to do that.”

Goodell previously also delivered an apology in front of the NFL for the league’s passiveness in dealing with issues of racial inequality.

NFL had an attempt to incorporate Colin Kaepernick back into the league last year, organizing a workout for signal-caller and inviting the teams to evaluate him. While Kaepernick initially agreed to the proposal, he ended up backing out due to the liability waiver that the league required him to sign.

Kaepernick entered the league in 2011 as a second-round pick and played 69 games with 58 starts as a pro. He threw for 12,271 yards and 72 touchdowns while adding 2,300 rushing yards and 13 rushing TDs.

Colin Kapernick has now gone nearly three years without wearing an NFL uniform. A decision by the NFL to host a workout for the former quarterback has sparked the hope that he could soon be back to the field.

Kaepernick announced via a tweet on Tuesday night that he had been contacted by his representatives about the possibility of a workout that the NFL had facilitated. Later, the news was confirmed that the former 49ers quarterback would work out for NFL coaches and general managers on Saturday in Atlanta.

A memo obtained by the press details that Kaepernick will perform both an on-field workout as well as participate in an interview session following the completion of the workout.

So far, the coaches of the Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, and Detroit Lions have confirmed that their personnel will attend the session. It has also been reported by sources that the Dallas Cowboys will have someone attending the workout.

It appears likely that more franchises will join the list by the time Saturday rolls around.

In any case, it appears that the polarizing six-year NFL veteran will finally have a chance to return to the league he once was a mainstay in. It still remains to be seen whether his dream will come true or not.

Washington Redskins decided to sign veteran quarterback Josh Johnson as their backup QB. The deal was announced on Wednesday.

This move comes after the Redskins lost their starting quarterback Alex Smith for the season in Week 11 and then saw his backup, QB Colt McCoy, suffering from a season-ending injury in Week 13. This propelled former New York Jets’ man Mark Sanchez to a position of a starter.

Josh Johnson is considered to be an NFL journeyman as the Redskins will be his 12th team since he broke in the league in 2008. Johnson started his career with Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went on to play for Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants and Houston Texans among others. During that time he only started five games, throwing his last regular season pass back in 2011.

Johnson’s NFL career stats include 96 completed passes out of 177 attempted for 1,042 yards and five touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 274 yards.

According to the Redskins’ head coach Jay Gruden, the organization also discussed the possibility to add former San Francisco 49ers’ QB Colin Kaepernick but opted to go in a different direction. Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016 when he started protesting against social injustice by kneeling during the national anthem.

He’s been discussed for sure,” – said Gruden. “It’s just going to be a matter of which way you want to go.”

There’s not a lot of time to get a brand-new quarterback and system installed in a couple of days,” – he added. “He’s been talked about, but we’ll probably go in a different direction.

Denver Broncos are currently looking into the possibility of bringing another quarterback to serve as a backup to starter Case Keenum. If the team decides to make this move, former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick won’t be on their wish list according to Broncos’ general manager John Elway.

Asked on Thursday whether signing Kaepernick, who is currently a free agent, might be “a viable option,” Elway said that the 30-year-old has “had his chance” to be part of the organization and “passed it.”

You know what, and I said this a while ago: Colin had his chance to be here. We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it,” – Elway explained. “As I said in my deposition … he’s had his chance to be here. He passed it.”

John Elway attempted to trade for Colin Kaepernick back in 2016, meeting twice with the player. Broncos were in need of a quarterback but tried to get Kaepernick’s salary down from $11.9 million to $7 million as part of the trade. After several discussions and rounds of negotiations, the two sides couldn’t meet eye-to-eye, and the deal fell through.

Broncos then traded up in 2016 NFL Draft to take Paxton Lynch 26th overall, a move they went to regret. Lynch just started four games since then and was demoted to third string QB several days ago.

Colin Kaepernick, on the other hand, became the first player to protest during the U.S. national anthem in the 2016 preseason. Following the end of 2016 season, Kaepernick became a free agent and didn’t play football since.

Week 2 of NFL preseason saw continued national anthem protests. Numerous NFL players are sitting out (Michael Bennett from Seattle Seahawks) or rising their fists (Cameron Jefferson from Buffalo Bills) during the national anthem as their way to show protest against social injustice. ESPN reported that Monday’s game between New York Giants and Cleveland Browns saw more than 10 players taking the knee behind the bench with several other players holding their hands on their shoulders as a way of support. Tight end Seth DeValve was among the players who protested, becoming the first white player to do so. After the game, rookie Jabrill Peppers gave the following statement:

There’s a lot of racial and social injustices in the world that are going on right now. We just decided to take a knee and pray for the people who have been affected and just pray for the world in general.

Christian Kirksey, Browns linebacker added: “We did it out of respect. No disrespect to anyone, we just felt like it was the right time and the need to do it.

The National Anthem Protests began in 2016 when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the playing of the national anthem before the 2016 preseason game against Green Bay Packers. It was his protest against ” wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.” Several other NFL players joined Kaepernick in the protests during the regular season. This also spread to other sports. Kaepernick’s actions were met with mixed reactions, and some argue that the protests are one of the reasons why he still remains a free agent after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
