Veteran right-hand pitcher Cole Hamels announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday. Hamels walks away after playing in MLB for 15 seasons.

Hamels signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres back in February in an attempt to return to action following shoulder surgery. However, he never made an official appearance for the Padres this season and has now decided it is time to call it quits.

Cole Hamels made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2006. He spent 10 years with the franchise earning three All-Star nods and helping the franchise win a World Series in 2008. The San Diego native was named World Series MVP in a 4-1 routing of the Tampa Bay Rays.

After leaving Philadelphia in 2015, Hamels spent time with Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and the Atlanta Braves. He made his last appearance on the mound in 2020 as a member of the Braves.

In the past couple of years, Hamels had issues with his throwing shoulder and had to undergo surgery to address the injury. He made comeback attempts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and now the Padres but failed to get back to the desired level.

Hamels has a 163–122 career record in MLB with a 3.43 ERA and 2,560 strikeouts. He was called up for the All-Star game four times.

After making just one start for the playoff-bound Atlanta Braves in 2020, veteran left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels has been placed on the 10-day injured list with more shoulder problems, a move which has ruled him out for the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

Hamels joined the Braves on a one-year, $18 million free-agent contract with the Braves prior to this season. He was expected to provide quality veteran experience to an Atlanta rotation full of young pieces and was expected to be one of the team’s strong points.

However, a shoulder strain caused Hamels to not make his Braves debut until September 17th after suffering the injury in Spring Training.

After making just one three-inning outing, Hamels reported more discomfort in his throwing shoulder over the weekend and will no longer be a part of the Braves’ playoff plans.

The Hamels news is a tough pill to swallow for the Braves, who have lost Mike Soroka and Cole Hamels due to injury, Felix Hernandez due to a COVID-19 opt-out, and Sean Newcomb and Mike Foltynewicz due to poor performance in the shortened season.

The World Series hopefuls will now be forced to rely on Max Fried along with a handful of unproven options as they gear up to begin their playoff run next week.

The Atlanta Braves continued their busy off-season on Wednesday by signing free agent starting pitcher Cole Hamels on a one-year deal valued at $18 million.

Hamels, who spent the past season and a half pitching for the Chicago Cubs, will join a team which stood as one of his biggest rivals during his decade-long tenure as a Philadelphia Phillie.

The veteran lefty, who will turn 36 in December, has shown himself to be one of the most durable pitcher in the league throughout his career. He surpassed the 24-start mark for the fourteenth consecutive season in 2019, posting a 7-7 record with a 3.81 ERA in 27 starts with Chicago.

Hamels missed time last season with an oblique injury that he suffered in late June. He had posted a sub-3 ERA before the injury, but then struggled down the stretch after returning from his time on the injured list.

The San Diego native will now join a Braves team that will be looking for its third consecutive NL East title in the 2020 season. He will serve as the veteran mentor of a young pitching staff that is projected to include starters like Mike Soroka, Max Fried, and Mike Foltynewicz.

Hamels will report to Braves spring training in February.
