The problems keep piling up for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Besides playing horrendously in January, they have now lost their second best player on the team. Kevin Love fractured his left hand in the 125-114 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday and will likely be out for six to eight weeks.

The injury occurred few minutes into the first quarter of the game when he made contact with Pistons’ Anthony Tolliver trying to catch a pass from Jeff Green under the basket. He tried to stay on the court for a few more possessions but had to leave the game and head straight to the locker room. The Cavs will provide further information about his injury after additional examination, while Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports that “need for surgery is still uncertain.” It is worth noting that Love already had a surgery on his left hand in 2009.

“It’s just unfortunate for our team,” – said LeBron James after the game. “Obviously with everything [that’s] been going on as of late with our ballclub, just trying to figure out how we’re going to play every night, different lineups and getting everybody into the flow, we don’t need to have Kev go out like that. He’s going to be out for quite a while — maybe two months — so it’s just tough.”

So far in the season, Kevin Love has been averaging 17.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

With Love out, the Cavs will have to find a way to overturn their longs stretch of bad games and it will be on newcomers Jae Crowder and Isaiah Thomas to step up their game. The reports say that the Cavs are willing to give up guard Iman Shumpert and forward Channing Frye in order to get Hill from the Kings. George Hill turned down an extension offer from the Utah Jazz in the offseason in order to sign with the Kings but has been unhappy with his role and the team’s overall performance. He has been averaging 10.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in this season for the Kings. The Cavs view Hill as a good addition to their roster due to his defensive abilities and hope he could help their struggling defense. The Cavaliers are currently ranked 29th in the NBA in defensive rating.

In order to make the trade work, Sacramento Kings would have to open two roster spots. The sources are saying that forwards Malachi Richardson and Skal Labissiere are among the players that could end up being traded away.

After three seasons, the Spurs traded Hill to the Indiana Pacer in 2011 in exchange for a 15th overall pick in that year’s draft, Kawhi Leonard. He was traded once again in 2016 to the Utah Jazz in a three-team deal which involved the Atlanta Hawks. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers have a principal agreement to send forward Richard Jefferson, guard Kay Felder alongside two second-round draft picks and $3 million to the Atlanta Hawks. According to Wojnarowski, the trade will be finalized on a Friday night or Saturday morning.
