Baker Mayfield’s era in Cleveland is officially over. The Browns announced that they have traded the 27-year-old quarterback to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

According to the official announcement, the Browns are entitled to a 2024 NFL Draft selection. They will reportedly get fourth-round or fifth-round selection depending on Mayfield’s time on the field.

Mayfield was on the trade market ever since the Browns finalized a trade for the Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson back in March. The Panthers were immediately one of the candidates for his next destination, but their unwillingness to take on Mayfield’s full $18.8 million salary in 2022 proved to be a stumbling block in the conversations.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the two teams eventually agreed to split the salary in a way that the Browns will pay $10.5 million while the Carolina will pitch in $4.85 million. Mayfield himself gave up the remaining $3.45 million in order to facilitate the move.

In Carolina, Baker Mayfield now gets to have a fresh start and a second chance to lead a franchise. However, he isn’t guaranteed a starting spot and will have to beat Sam Darnold and rookie Matt Coral for the job. Mayfield and Darnold both entered the league as part of the 2018 draft class, with Mayfield being selected first overall and Darnold being taken third overall.

Mayfield leaves Cleveland with 59 starts under his belt and a 29-30 record in four years with the Browns. He threw for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions while completing 61.6 percent of his passes. He then went on to complete 11 out of 20 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns and seal 20-10 win over the Giants.

Baker Mayfield looked great on the field and convinced that the Browns didn’t make a mistake by drafting him. He showcased all the talents that made him the No.1 overall pick including his arm strength, mobility, and ability to make the right decisions under pressure.

While some people were caught by surprise with Mayfield’s ability, his coach Hue Jackson didn’t expect anything less.

First, the team fired the man who passed up on Deshaun Watson and brought in an experienced and capable general manager in John Dorsey. Yes, former GM Sashi Brown did draft Myles Garrett but that wasn’t much of a brainer, to be honest.

Dorsey immediately got to work and brought in Pro-Bowler and NFL’s leader in receptions, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, alongside former first-round pick Damarious Randall and quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Then, he finally found Browns’ franchise quarterback when he drafted Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in 2018 NFL Draft.

Alongside Dorsey, Mayfield will also be one of the main reasons for Brown’s success in the future. Everyone who is remotely familiar with the NFL knows that the Browns didn’t have anything similar to a franchise quarterback since 1993 when they decided to part way with Bernie Kosar. Since drafting Kosar in 1985, the Browns drafted 14 quarterbacks and neither one of them proved to be a good choice. The franchise also had 24 quarterbacks starting at least one game since they were reinstated into the NFL in 1999. It is also worth noting that the Browns could and should draft the likes of Donovan McNabb, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Carson Wentz, and Deshaun Watson but decided to pass on them.
