Reports that former Green Bay Packers’ linebacker Clay Matthews is retired from football seem to be false. Matthews’ agent Ryan Williams issued a statement on Friday in which he says that his client “remains open to playing in the NFL in 2020.”

Matthews previously failed to agree to a deal with the Denver Broncos, who are on the market for a linebacker after Pro Bowler Von Miller suffered a season-ending injury. After this, rumors surfaced that the main reason why the two sides didn’t come to a deal is that the 34-year-old Matthews doesn’t want to play football anymore.

While William confirmed talks with Broncos, he refuted the rest of the report.

“We were unable to come to an agreement with Denver, but Clay remains open to playing in the NFL in 2020, provided it’s the right opportunity for him and his family,” William wrote on Twitter.

Clay Matthews spent the first 10 years of his career in Green Bay, winning a Super Bowl with the franchise and earning six Pro Bowl nods during that time. He joined the LA Rams on a two-year deal last summer, but only lasted one season with the organization before being released in March.

While the Rams moved on from him, Matthews actually had a more than solid campaign last year. Despite playing only 13 games, he racked up 8.0 sacks, which is the most he had since 2018. He also added 37 tackles, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Sean McVay and the LA Rams wished that their season would end sometime in January, or even better with another Super Bowl run, but their disappointing season will end in week 17. Out of playoff contention, they will be playing their last home game ever at the iconic LA Coliseum against the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.

Although the Rams only recently moved back to LA in 2016, their history with the Coliseum goes back much farther than that. The Rams originally moved to LA from Cleveland in 1946 and called the Coliseum home from 1946 until 1979 when they played in Anaheim Stadium until their move to St. Louis in 1994.

For Clay Mathews, his final game at the Coliseum will be an emotional one, as there is much family history there. His father Clay, uncle Bruce, and brother Kyle, all played here for the USC Trojans before he joined as well, and helped the Trojans to 4 straight Rose Bowls.

Although the Rams will be moving only 10 miles down the road to SoFi Stadium next season, the Coliseum isn’t going anywhere. The iconic stadium built in 1923, has many memories of college championships, NFL games, a baseball world series, and even two summer Olympics.

Six-times Pro Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews spent the first 10 years of his career with the Green Bay Packers and figured he did enough to warrant another contract so he could retire with the organization. Things, however, didn’t go as planned for Matthews with Packers deciding not to offer him an extension this summer.

Matthews, who ended up signing with Los Angeles Rams, recently decided to talk about his Packers exit for the first time in an interview with NFL.com’s Michael Silver. He admitted that he was “surprised” with Green Bay’s decision, as he believed he will be with the franchise for “a few more years.”

“I was kind of taken aback because I thought I’d always be back there, whether it was at a cheaper price [or not],” – Matthews told Silver. “So that was kind of a shock, because [my family] stayed out there and had our third child in the offseason, and I was hanging in town training there and everything. And yeah, that was kind of a surprise to me because I just figured I would be out there a few more years.”

According to Matthews, the reason that Packers gave him was that there was “no room” for him on the team anymore.

“People say, ‘You chose to go to L.A.’ I didn’t choose. They told me there was no room for me,” he added.

After hitting the free market, Clay Matthews received a two-year, $9.25 million offer from the Rams. Although accepting this deal would see Matthews return to his hometown of LA, the 33-year-old made one more attempt to stay with Green Bay.

Matthews approached Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst to see whether they would match the offer but received a negative answer. This was when he realized his time in Wisconsin is over and accepted the contract from Rams.

During his 10 years with the Packers, Matthews won a Super Bowl ring, made six Pro-Bowl appearances and received one All-Pro honor.

After spending a decade with the Green Bay Packers, linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. is heading for a new destination.

Matthews agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, moving on to a new team for the first time since he was drafted by Green Bay in 2009.

The Rams add a native of the area who grew up in Los Angeles and played college football at the University of Southern California.

Despite slowing down a bit recently, Matthews has been known as one of the top outside linebackers in football during the majority of his NFL career. He made the Pro Bowl six times during his ten years with Green Bay.

His best season came shortly after being drafted back in 2010, when he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Pro selection.

Matthews had his worst season as a professional last year. Despite starting all 16 of the Packers’ games, he only tallied 43 total tackles and 3.5 sacks.

In his ten seasons in Green Bay, Matthews recorded 482 tackles and 83.5 sacks. He was a durable player, missing only 13 of 160 total games.

The Rams will now hope that Matthews can re-discover some of the play-making and quarterback rushing ability that he showed previously in his career to enhance their defense.
