The New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum has a small pneumothorax in his right lung, the team announced. His lung issue was confirmed through imaging performed on Sunday.

The Pelicans revealed that McCollum will undergo an additional examination within the next 48 hours in order to determine the course of action to take, after which another update will be provided.

McCollum previously dealt with the same issue in 2021 while playing for the Portland Trail Blazers. He missed 18 games that season and was traded to the Pelicans three weeks after his return. The guard is currently averaging 21.7 points, 5.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in six games.

The New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum has been announced as the latest NBA Analyst to join ESPN. This is the latest duty in what is already a packed schedule for McCollum with the 30-year-old player also serving as president of the National Basketball Players Association.

“I am excited to bring what I feel is my unique perspective, based on my vast knowledge of the game that I’ve gained during my nine years as a player in the NBA,” McCollum said upon his acceptance of this role. The NBA star is expected to make his network debut on Thursday, June 2, during “NBA Finals: Celebrating 75”; an alternative presentation of the opening game between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

McCollum’s debut as an analyst will not be his first foray into broadcast journalism. A graduate from Lehigh University with a journalism degree, McCollum the Pelicans guard has previously appeared on various ESPN segments as an analyst.

In addition to providing analysis for games in the NBA Summer League, McCollum is expected to work with ESPN to develop a new podcast. He will also be slated to appear in numerous ESPN studio shows throughout the year.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Blazers have traded McCollum to the New Orleans Pelicans for a package highlighted by Josh Hart, Nickeil Walker-Alexander, and a 2022 protected first-rounder.

Reportedly, Portland will also get guards Tomas Satoransky and Didi Louzada alongside two second-round selections as part of the deal. On the other hand, the Pelicans acquire forward Larry Nance Jr. and veteran Tony Snell alongside McCollum.

The Trail Blazers have been shopping McCollum for a while now, looking to reshape their roster after coming up short in the playoffs in recent seasons and seeing four first-round exits in the past five years. At one point, they were close to sending the NBA’s Most Improved Player from 2016 to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Ben Simmons, but the two teams couldn’t agree on a draft compensation included in the deal. After that, the market for McCollum dried up until the Pelicans picked up the phone to make the inquiry.

New Orleans was looking to add a reliable scoring threat recently, and it’s safe to say they have successfully completed the task with the acquisition of McCollum. The 30-year-old averaged 20+ points in each of the past six seasons and should comfortably clear the number in 2021-22 as well. In 36 games he played for Portland this season, he scored 20.5 points per contest while adding 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists.

On the other hand, Portland made the deal by having a long-term picture in mind. So while the deal won’t make them better at the moment, they have acquired tradable assets they can potentially flip into a difference-making player. Another benefit of the trade for them is that they are now more than $17 million under the tax.

The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Tuesday that guard CJ McCollum will be out of action for an indefinite time after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung. While McCollum was initially believed to be suffering from a rib contusion, the real nature of his injury was revealed by a CT scan.

The 30-year-old’s injury came during the last quarter of his team’s 145-117 loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday evening. While initially listed as probable for the Trail Blazer’s game against the LA Clippers on Monday night, McCollum ended up not making an appearance in the team’s 102-90 loss.

McCollum’s injury is the latest in a series of setbacks currently faced by the Trail Blazers. Currently, Portland is without All-Star Damian Lillard, who has missed the last four games due to lower abdominal tendinopathy. Forward Nassir Little has also missed four games with a left ankle sprain, while Anfernee Simons and Cody Zeller remain unavailable with a right ankle sprain and a bruised right quad respectively. Guard Ben McLemore is currently recovering from a bruised hip that he incurred during the loss to the Clippers.

Portland next faces the Minessota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. They currently sit in 11th place on the Western Conference standings.

Portland cruised to a 114-94 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night to go up 2-0 in the series.

The Blazers held Russell Westbrook to one of his worst games in recent memory, holding the Thunder point guard to 5-20 shooting and only 14 points.

Despite Paul George’s solid 27 point night, the Thunder simply couldn’t keep up with Portland’s offensive attack.

Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum put up big nights for the Blazers, scoring 29 and 33 points, respectively.

As the series shifts to Oklahoma City, the Blazers have a commanding 2-0 series lead and look to be a good bet to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

If Oklahoma City is to have any chance, they’ll have to go back to the drawing board and find a way to stop Portland’s potent offensive attack.

If not, it could be a quick exit from this year’s edition of the playoffs for OKC.
