Starting pitcher Hunter Greene agreed to a six-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds, the team confirmed on Tuesday. The deal, worth $53 million, provides the 23-year-old player with the prospect of a long-term future with the team after a summer of uncertainty.

Included in the deal is a seventh-year option worth $21 million as well as a buyout clause of $2 million. This agreement also saw the buyout of two years of Greene’s free agency.

“The commitment we made to Hunter reflects his commitment to this organization and to our community,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini stated following the announcement of the right-hander’s contract extension. “He is part of the foundation of young players who will continue to help us build a successful major league team.”

Greene was drafted as the number two pick in 2017, striking out 164 over 125⅔ innings and posting a 4.44 ERA during his rookie season. He underwent Tommy John surgery a little more than a year later, spending the 2020 season with the Reds’ alternate side. During his four starts this season, Green has struck out batters at an even higher rate than he did in his rookie season.

In order to end their struggles at the beginning of 2019 MLB season, Cincinnati Reds decided to address their crowded outfield over the weekend. Reds announced on Sunday that they had released All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp while sending Scott Schebler to their affiliate Triple-A Louisville.

Kemp arrived to Cincinnati in December from Los Angeles Dodgers and ended up playing just 20 games with the Reds in which he had a batting average of .200 alongside one home run and five RBIs. He missed the previous 11 games with the broken rib.

According to Reds manager David Bell, the reason why the team decided to move on from Kemp is that they thought the 33-year-old wasn’t a good fit.

“We just didn’t see a great fit for Matt here,” – said Bell. “He’s obviously had a great career and has been a great player. Just how our outfield is shaping up and the roster construction, we didn’t see a great fit for Matt, and that’s how the decision was made.”

Reds president Dick Williams also confirmed that fit was the biggest issue for Kemp in Cincinnati.

“With our support, (manager) David (Bell) is working hard to create a new environment in the clubhouse and on the field,” – Williams told The Cincinnati Enquirer. “After giving it time to develop, we didn’t see Matt fitting in. We wanted to give him the opportunity to help another team.”

Matt Kemp spent the majority of his career with LA Dodgers while also having stints with San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves. During his time in MLB, he earned three All-Star appearances alongside three Silver Slugger Awards and two Golden Glove Awards.

Kemp’s career stats include .285 batting average, 281 home runs, and 1,010 RBIs.

Cincinnati Reds have announced on Sunday that they have activated Anthony DeSclafani from the 60-day disabled list and that he will make his 2018 season debut on Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies. This will be the first MLB game for the 28-year-old since September 2016.

DeSclafani suffered a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament in late 2016, which caused him to miss the entire 2017 season recovering. He successfully came back for the Reds’ spring training camp, but unfortunately suffered another injury which has kept him off the field for the first part of 2018 season. Now, according to Reds’ manager Jim Riggleman, the player is 100 percent ready.

Very much so,” – said Riggleman when asked whether the Anthony DeSclafani is ready to play without limits. “He’s gone through many rehabs starts at three different levels, all the Goodyear stuff. He’s stretched out to the high 90s in pitches. There’s nothing left for him to do except pitch for us.

Anthony DeSclafani was drafted by Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft but didn’t play a single game for the team, being traded to Miami Marlins in 2012. Marlins promoted him to the majors in 2014, with DeSclafani being featured in 13 games and posting a 2-2 record with 6.27 ERA. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in December 2014 and went on to play in 51 games for the team over two seasons. DeSclafani had 18-18 record during that time and 3.66 ERA.
