The Cleveland Browns made a difficult decision on Tuesday, parting with veteran linebacker and team captain Christian Kirksey after spending six years with the team.

The 27-year-old linebacker and his now former team attempted to come to terms on a renegotiation of his contract earlier in the offseason, but after talks broke down, Cleveland decided to cut ties and save cap space heading into a crucial free agency period.

Kirksey was selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of the University of Iowa. He became an established starter in his first season with the team, becoming one of the most valued members of its defense.

After the 2016 season, Kirskey was given a new four-year, $38 million contract extension that included $20 in guaranteed money.

He helped to anchor the Browns defense, recording 484 career tackles, 11.5 sacks and 2 interceptions over his career with the team.

The main reason for the Browns’ decision to release the Missouri native was due to health concerns with their former defensive anchor. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Week 2 of the 2019 season, missing the rest of the year.

Now, Kirksey will look to catch on with a new team and prove that he still has plenty of football left in the tank.

Everything is pointing out that Cleveland Browns finally might see their share of good luck this season. After going 1-31 in the past two years, the Browns organization is looking to start winning football games in 2018 and build a winning culture once again. It seems like they are doing a good job so far, at least according to their linebacker Christian Kirksey.

Kirksey, who is entering his fifth season with the team, recently spoke with the NFL Network and said that this year the Browns have a “different feel,” compared to previous years he has been on the team.

Being one of the longest-tenured players on the team, I’ve seen the teams come through Cleveland,” – said Kirksey. “I’m going on to my second head coach, my third general manager, my third defensive coordinator, so I’ve seen players and front office people come in and out the building, and this is just a different feel.

Christian Kirksey went on to praise some of Browns’ newest acquisitions including quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

He’s our guy to take the field and finally have a competitive attitude on the offensive side of the ball,” – said Kirksey said of Taylor before adding: “Jarvis Landry, Josh Gordon, all those guys just have a swagger about themselves. In all my years I’ve never had that on the offensive side of the ball. Those guys are telling us, ‘We’re working today.‘”

Christian Kirksey was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft. His stats include 430 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Week 2 of NFL preseason saw continued national anthem protests. Numerous NFL players are sitting out (Michael Bennett from Seattle Seahawks) or rising their fists (Cameron Jefferson from Buffalo Bills) during the national anthem as their way to show protest against social injustice. ESPN reported that Monday’s game between New York Giants and Cleveland Browns saw more than 10 players taking the knee behind the bench with several other players holding their hands on their shoulders as a way of support. Tight end Seth DeValve was among the players who protested, becoming the first white player to do so. After the game, rookie Jabrill Peppers gave the following statement:

There’s a lot of racial and social injustices in the world that are going on right now. We just decided to take a knee and pray for the people who have been affected and just pray for the world in general.

Christian Kirksey, Browns linebacker added: “We did it out of respect. No disrespect to anyone, we just felt like it was the right time and the need to do it.

The National Anthem Protests began in 2016 when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the playing of the national anthem before the 2016 preseason game against Green Bay Packers. It was his protest against ” wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States.” Several other NFL players joined Kaepernick in the protests during the regular season. This also spread to other sports. Kaepernick’s actions were met with mixed reactions, and some argue that the protests are one of the reasons why he still remains a free agent after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
